Once he started a solo career, Brown enjoyed commercial and critical success with his second album Don't Be Cruel (1988) which spawned five Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles, including the number one hit "My Prerogative", and the Grammy Award-winning "Every Little Step". In 1989, Brown contributed two songs to the soundtrack of Ghostbusters II. In 1992, Brown married superstar singer Whitney Houston, with whom he later had a daughter named Bobbi Kristina Brown. The couple's drug issues and domestic disputes made them tabloid fodder.
Brown's next album Bobby (1992) spawned several singles including "Humpin' Around", "Get Away", and "Good Enough", however, sales of Bobby did not reach the level of its predecessor.
Brown also appeared in the films A Thin Line Between Love and Hate and Two Can Play That Game. He returned to New Edition for a reunion album and tour from 1996 to 1997, and returned with all six members for another stint in 2005. Brown and Houston starred in the 2005 reality show Being Bobby Brown; Houston filed for divorce two years later in 2007.

But now I understand what those mistakes were for Throughout my travels girl I realized
What you see, what you get don't always coincide
A bird in the hand beats two in a bush
But just one look was all it took
Could it be thayt we're the only ones thinking of
Harmony, ecstacy, there's something about this love
We, we have something in common
Girl (Boy) you mean so much to me it should be plain to see That we... We have something in common
It's the way we feel about each other when we're together
Now I'm the type of girl who understands my man
I'll be strong when he's weak, I will hold his hand
Now I believe old fashioned rules and old fashioned ways Courtesy, honesty, like in the old days
You're my man and I'm your girl
There's nothing better in this whole wide world
I'll stand by your side till the very end
All in all, best of love, we are friends
[Chorus]
Bobby Brown: Girl you know it's you that I adore
Whitney: And there's no one in this world that I love more
The lyrics of "Something In Common" by Bobby Brown featuring Whitney Houston speak about the realization of past mistakes and the acknowledgement that the present is where they are meant to be. The song opens with an admission of past mistakes, but there is a newfound understanding of what they have learned from them. Through travels and experiences, they have realized that what they thought they wanted may not be what they actually needed. The line "what you see, what you get don't always coincide" suggests that perceptions can be deceiving, and there is more to someone than meets the eye. The bird in the hand analogy insinuates that the present is more important than the future or something that may not be guaranteed.
The chorus repeats the phrase "we have something in common" and emphasizes the connection between the two. They have a deep understanding of each other that goes beyond physical attraction, as the second verse suggests. The lyrics explain how one of them will be strong when the other is weak, and they value courtesy and honesty. The declaration that "You're my man and I'm your girl" solidifies that they are in a committed relationship and that they will stand by each other until the end.
The final lines, when Brown and Houston sing "Girl, you know it's you that I adore/And there's no one in this world that I love more," highlights the closeness of their relationship and the certainty that they want to be together.
