1) youth crew hardcore
Bold is a late 1980s youth crew hardcore band from Westchester County, New York, which along with bands like Youth Of Today and Side By Side were a part of the Youth Crew, and an influence in the late 80's straight edge hardcore scene. The band progressed to a more rock-oriented sound in its later years.
2) psych garage obscurity
Bold released one obscure, self-titled psychedelic album on ABC in 1969, though earlier they'd released two hard garage rock singles on Cameo and Dynovoice (one of them credited to Steve Walker & the Bold). One of those singles, the group original "Gotta Get Some," was very much like Paul Revere & the Raiders at their toughest, and became a favorite among '60s garage collectors after its inclusion on Pebbles, Vol. 9. Another -- a less distinctive cover of "The Train Kept a Rollin'," showed up on Pebbles, Vol. 10. By the time of their ABC album, they'd gone psychedelic, and dropped the "the" from their "the Bold" billing. Produced by a young Bill Szymczyk (later to produce the Eagles, the Who, and several other stars), Bold is a minor but respectable and diverse LP, mixing harmony vocals, classically-influenced organ, and some of the folk-rock sensibility of Buffalo Springfield in that band's harder-rocking moments.
Bold grew out of the Esquires, who formed at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA, where one of their friends was the young, then-university student Taj Mahal. The Esquires released a pretty forgettable, early British Invasion-influenced single before changing their personnel, changing their name to Bold, and releasing their Cameo and Dynovoice singles in 1966 and 1967, respectively. Although they were popular regionally, opening for stars like Mahal, Big Brother & the Holding Company, and Jimi Hendrix, their ABC album didn't break them to a bigger audience, and they disbanded shortly afterward. Lead guitarist Bob LaPalm and drummer Tim Griffin formed Clean Living, who put out a couple of albums on Vanguard in the early 1970s, and Griffin briefly played drums for James Taylor. Everything released by Bold -- including the ABC album, the two pre-ABC singles, and the Esquires single -- is included on the Misty Lane CD compilation Lullaby Opus Four.

Bold Lyrics

I will not but others may
Clear is how the world is for me
My horizons broad I'm truly free
My minds clear
Free from hurt
My minds clear
Try to keep my mind without guilt
Forget the past pain I have felt
Sounds of hope I wish to hear
From minds I know are clear
My minds clear
Free from hurt
My minds clear
I value it's worth
In Bold's song Clear, the lyrics depict a person who values a clear and unburdened mind. The opening lines "Put poison in your body that's the way, I will not but others may" suggests a divergence in lifestyle choices, where the character remains clear-headed while others may choose to intoxicate themselves. The character acknowledges their different choices, but ultimately values their own clarity of mind. The line "Clear is how the world is for me, my horizons broad I'm truly free" reinforces this belief, as the character views the world unobscured by a foggy mind, leading to a sense of freedom and a broadened perspective.
The chorus of the song further emphasizes the value of a clear mind in achieving an overall sense of well-being. The repetition of "My mind's clear, free from hurt, I value its worth" highlights the importance of mental clarity in maintaining emotional balance and a sense of self-worth. The following lines "Try to keep my mind without guilt, forget the past pain I have felt, sounds of hope I wish to hear, from minds I know are clear" suggest that mental clarity can also lead to a release from past emotional burdens and an openness to positivity from others who share the same outlook.
