Once again, as always, another great video. I always loved the Dolomite. In the 80's my dad had a 1300 Dolly as the customer courtesy car for his car repair business. I was gutted when he sold it before I was old enough to drive.

Once again you've presented a very informative and entertaining video.
I've never even driven a Dolomite, but I did own a Triumph 1300 for a while. (My most memorable Triumph was a T150V 750cc triple, and only had two wheels, but I digress).
I have mostly fond memories of the 1300. I remember being presented with a snow drift higher than the bonnet one morning - the 1300 just drove straight through it.

On another occasion I went into a bend that was tighter than I thought, much faster than I should have. Not even a hint of a slide.
The one thing that sticks in my mind was when my boss rather begrudgingly asked me if I could give him a lift - he wouldn't normally want to be seen in a 'cheap' car.
Watching him run his finger over the walnut dash was priceless.

The first car I ever drove was Dolomite 1300 back in the early 1980's. It is a shame that there was no money to put the Triumph SD2 (The Dolomite replacement) into production.

Fantastic! My uncle had a Dolomite Sprint from new. I always thought it was an attractive car. I like that you give a full and comprehensive history of not just the actual car, but, also the circumstances and internal politics that shape the cars you review. Thoroughly researched, love your channel and that you have an obvious passion for cars I remember from my youth. You, Ian from Hubnut, Matt from Furiousdriving and Steph from idriveaclassic are all amazing. Thanks again for the hard work you put in to all your uploads. Already looking forward to the next one. Been so entertaining these last two years as I have gone through several cycles of chemotherapy. These videos and card, bring back many happy memories of childhood. I'm not sure how this example is still on the road. The owner bought it in 1996 for £250, when he was 18. Ragged it about as I imagine you did with yours, but somehow it has remained unscathed. That being said, it has been treated like a baby for the last few years at least!

Aged 11 I was asked to go along as the scorer for a cricket game. My lift turned up in a yellow Dolomite. I had to climb across the driver's seat to sit in the passenger's because the door wasn't to be opened as it was being held onto the body by rope. "Please hold onto the door handle when going around corners so it doesn't fall off" he said.
I wasn't able to take in the rest of the car as fear of dying scrambles the brain so thanks Ed for this brilliantly comprehensive review.🙂
BTW it's a myth that people drive better on the way home after 5 pints.

@Twin-Cam It was a great little engine, although I believe descended from the original Standard engine. The twin SUs helped give it a little bit more pep, but they were a real pain to balance.

@Twin-Cam The 1500 was fine; not as sporty as the 1850 but made a much better car than, say, a Cortina 1500. I've had three 1500s, four 1850s, two Sprints and a Toledo, and loved them all; the 1850 is my favourite, but the 1500 is very close behind.

The Sprint is a car that I've admired from the day it was imported to Australia - in yellow only. Now I'm too old and they are far too expensive.

Russett Brown was never my favourite BL colour, but it's interesting that so many have survived in good condition; it appears to have better rust-resistance than all the other colours!

As always a nice video, thank you. I remember Dolomites from when they were new... Always liked Triumph's, I also like the Vitesse, one of the first cars to have a relatively big engine in a small car. I find the Dolomite much more attractive than the first BMW 3 series, BL... such a pity!

I would actually have thought it was a Lancia. Despite the sharp highs and lows of the motor trade, Britain's industry was definitely good at defeating itself, While Leyland's emblem was simply cursed. Now that the workers fought too hard for their own rights and privileges and the management unhelpful, they strangled the originally mighty tree that could have fed their grandchildren too.

Excellent video, enjoyed it immensely. As others have noted, the presentation and delivery is spot-on, packed with facts and information but given in such an easily digestible style that it was never boring. I can remember commuting 4-up in a Triumph Herald convertible in the mid-1970s and I can tell you the back seat of that Dolomite looks palatial!

Probably 1978 and I was on my way to Devizes Motor Company to buy a Ford RS2000 when I noticed a 1973 Triumph Dolomite Sprint in BRG in their car lot, I immediately fell in love and bought it on that day, wonderful design and how sweet did that engine sound at high revs, almost instinctively later I would become a Saab man.

As a SAAB enthusiast, that slant four looks really familiar (but backwards). I've got the naturally aspirated 8 valve in my 900 which doesn't hide its Triumph heritage as much as the newer twin-cam 900s did.

My first car was a Triumph Herald followed by a Triumph 1300 then a 1500 and my dad had a Toledo. We loved Triumphs they were always classy. I particularly liked the wooden dash and circular segmented warning lights. It’s a shame Triumph swirled down the BL sink hole.

A great review but how have you managed to skip from a Herald to the Dolomite range without any mention of the six cylinder Vitesse which started out as a 1600 and evolved into a 2 litre and was in production until 1972.

That was a great Ed I really enjoyed it I remember the Dolomite Sprint very well I did my apprentice at the Lex Motor Company 1969 to 1973 they were Jag ,Triumph and Rover . I also went to school with Paul Rouse younger brother of Andy Rouse who was the driver that took this car to the BTCC championship. I raced minis and would often be at the same race meeting as Andy and it was amazing to see him through this car around and win. I also raced in the Ford Mexcio Championship which Andy also won. Have you covered the Ford Mexcio yet ? that would interesting to hear your take on that little gem . Keep the videos coming :)

I just remembered the ill-fated attempt to beautify the already stunning Dolomite: any takers for the amazing 1975 pastiche of Michelotti's finest work, the Panther Rio? Intended to provide a scaled-down, low-cost pseudo-Rolls Royce experience for the beleaguered (or perhaps not so beleaguered) upper classes in strike-bound, inflation-riven Britain, it was beautifully made but cost even more than a V12 Jag. A total of 18 were made and 5 are thought to survive to this day. (This year's challenge: find one and review it!) Definitely one of those "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" tales from motoring history.

i always loved your videos and your way to mix hard facts and you own heartfelt emotions toward the car you present... and your editing, scripting and pacing got to a high level... always look forward to your videos... especialy when you talk about cars that were never realy well known here in germany... at the time, my only knowledge of this cars existence was when it appeared on german tv in the professionals... but i haven't forgotten

'The Dolomite was a British BMW'; well, I'd rephrase that to 'the BMW was a German Dolomite'! In 1973 I bought a very early example of the 1850 (it was just Dolomite at that time) and a friend had a BMW 2002ti of similar age, and in my opinion the Triumph was the better car in all respects. He upgraded to a tii and I went with a Dolomite Sprint, and my opinion didn't change - the British car was still the better one.

Hugely enjoyable and accurate video. I was around Seventeen when this car came on the market. My best mate (later to be best man had a Sprint model in the Rustic brown which his dad passed on to him? It was later replaced with the same model in cream. My own father was in the motor trade managing the sales of the Birmingham Mercedes franchise.most of my childhood was spent absorbing car stats and facts. For this reason, I cannot find one inaccuracy in this account. Tremendous research.

Well done, Ed. Great insight in to the workings of BL. The Dolomite Sprint I have loved looking at since the first time I saw one. Personally I think BL made a big blunder with the Dolomite. They had a fantastic platform and drivetrain set already in production. The TR series would have made an ideal platform for a car to beat everyone. It could have been the breakthrough sporting saloon. The gorgeous inline 6 from the TR5a or TR6 would have allowed the top Dolomite to be something special, sitting in size, style, and spec just below the Rover models. The independent rear suspension was already engineered and in production, so designing a whole new live axle back end was a bit of a waste of money, too. After all, Toyota and Datsun/Nissan did very well taking their saloon and creating a sporting car out of it.

Another great point. The Marina was just cheap to put in production, but had they integrated Austin-Morris and JRT from the start, even, they could have achieved this and made a much better car as a result.
If they really wanted to keep costs to a minimum and retain badge engineering, a cheaper Toledo with a larger body may have been a decent shout?

@Twin-Cam Another of the brutal ironies of the British Leyland plughole (excellent term, by the way!) is that, had BMC had the courage to kill the flatlining Morris Minor by the mid 'sixties, the Toledo/Dolly platform would have made much better underpinnings for the new volume car they needed so badly. The Triumph floorpan and suspension, with double wishbones up front and links/coils at the rear, would have afforded a truly modern car with decent handling and ride. Much greater volumes would have cut costs. As it was, Cowley was stuck with the tracks that had built the Minor and there was as usual no cash or time to rip them out. So BL's new volume car, the Marina, inherited the Minor's running gear from the mid-40s, and the lower-volume RWD Triumphs got the good stuff... ;-/

I have to agree with Tim on this one I'm afraid!
The suspension of the TRs was for a body on frame car, so couldn't be placed under a Dolomite, and that of the 2000 was too expensive, as the whole reason the Dolly exists was to lower their production costs.

Interesting idea - the only problem being that the basic engineering of the TR series (up to TR6) was done in the early 1950s and was based on a separate chassis. Standard-Triumph didn't have access to press capacity (which is why the Herald, Spitfire etc used the same chassis-based construction) and were stuck with old high-cost methods of building their cars. It would have crippled S-T if they'd tried to build a volume mid-range car this way (the Herald's early warranty costs nearly did them in anyway). From the 1300 on, they had to go monocoque.

Best car review I ever heard about the car that set me on the road to motor madness - loved the Dolomite Sprint and that body shell was just perfect - even today it looks cool! Somehow I missed that car and bought a 1974 2000 TC at 20 years old in 1976 - mostly for the rear leg over room!

They only really hit the nail on the head with the Rover R8. The SD3 which replaced the Acclaim was a lovely car (my first car) but only had one body and 2 engine choices, though the Vitesse was a hoot. BL were spending too much time with clashing and competing brands under their umbrella even though Spen King was working his magic. I still mourn the demise of Rover.

I had 2 Sprints in the1970s, white and yellow. I had the white one from new and drove it hard. Bought the yellow from an older gent (age I am now!). The engine felt less powerful. I did not have many problems with either of them. I have been a BMW person from the 1990s on. I remember the Sprint as having a great upright driving position with clear gauges. So different to today’s distractions.
