Solo se le ven los ojos
A la vieja, cerillera
Dicen que es medio alcahueta
Y que por unas pesetas
Te hará saber cuanto quieras
Te contará que fue hermosa
Y que ejerció de ramera
Y que su casa de citas
Fue de lo más exquisita
Y allí no entraba cualquiera
Pues pasaba de visita
Un ministro de levita
Con monóculo y chistera
Y un magistrado famoso
Y diputado rumboso
Y diputado rumboso
Y hasta un cura calavera
La cerillera, reina de la noche
Del viento y la escarcha, vieja compañera
La cerillera, que aguanta el reproche
Del frío pellejo, de sus posaderas
The lyrics of Braulio's song "La Cerillera" depict the story of an elderly woman who, despite being dressed in rags, can only see her eyes. She is referred to as the "cerillera," which means someone who sells matches. The lyrics suggest that she is known for being somewhat promiscuous and willing to reveal secrets for a few coins. Her hoarse voice tells stories of her past beauty and her former profession as a prostitute. She claims to have had an elegant and exclusive brothel where not just anyone was allowed to enter, but rather high-ranking individuals like ministers, magistrates, deputies, and even a mischievous priest.
The song portrays the cerillera as a resilient character who has endured the harshness of life. She is described as the queen of the night, accompanied by the wind and frost, and someone who withstands the reproach and coldness of her old age.
Throughout the lyrics, there is a sense of nostalgia and reflection on a woman who has lived a tumultuous life, serving both sides during a war and losing favor and wealth after its end. The lyrics highlight the cerillera's past achievements, struggles, and the downfall she experienced due to her lack of loyalty to any particular side.
Overall, "La Cerillera" is a moving song that portrays the life of a marginalized and forgotten individual, emphasizing their resilience and the stories they carry within them.
