Holloway did not fit the Motown mold well. She lived in Los Angeles, not Detroit. She also had a grittier edge than the typical polished Motown performer, and wrote songs as well as sang them, which was unprecedented for a female Motown artist. Brenda Hollowy inspired many pop artists, including The Beatles who asked her to perform as the opening act on their 1965 tour of the U.S. She was the only female to open for them.

Whose shoulder are you gonna cry on
What are you gonna do on the day
When I turn my head and just walk away
What are you gonna say to your friends
When the talk around town begins
Will you tell them how you treated me bad
Will you tell them how you made me so sad
'Cause you make some people
Think that you love me a lot
But they just don't know you
And what they see isn't what we've got
We're happy in the public eye
They think you're such a wonderful guy
But they don't know how much you've lied
And they don't know how much I've cried
You're a real Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
Oh, yeah
You make a pass at
Every girl that you see
Then when they hurt you
You come running and crying to me
I comfort you whenever you're low
And you don't have a place you can go
You put your head on my shoulder to cry
And then you turn around and tell me a lie
And I just can't take it
I've gotta make it now
What are you gonna do when I'm gone
And what are you gonna do when I'm gone
What are you gonna do when I'm gone
What are you gonna do when I'm gone
In Brenda Holloway's song "When I'm Gone", she addresses the turmoil of a relationship that is on the verge of ending. The singer asks what the other person will do when she leaves. She asks who they will turn to when they need someone to cry on, knowing that she won't be there to comfort them anymore. She also questions what the person will say to their friends when they find out about their treatment of her. She reveals how they make some people think that they love her a lot, but they don't know the truth about their relationship. The singer is aware of the differences between their public and private life, and how people view them in the public eye as being the perfect couple. Yet, she knows the reality of their relationship, the lies, the crying, the doubt, and the continuous cycle of dysfunction.

Talk about someone being "robbed", one of the most under rated singers from Motown..for me, she was always a "diamond in the rough" for Motown..love her music.

One of Motown‘s best and most underrated female singers. Wonderful voice.💛
@edwinjones1000
The word was that she wouldn't give Berry Gordy sex, so she was sent back to Cali and her songs were not promoted. I am 71 years old. Music was a small industry. Everybody knew what was going on behind the scenes.
@devinrivers5808
@@edwinjones1000Yeah, I heard about that too..this lady has self respect
@italoman9
Damn, her voice is like getting the energy of laying in the sun on a warm, summery day -- full of mellowness and electricity. What a talented artist.
