Vocalist Oliver Sykes added: "This was the turning point; it was the first one that Jordan really got his teeth into, and obviously you can hear that because it's very heavy on the electronica. It was floating around for ages, and I think it really started to shine when we took my vocal lead and used it [on the keyboard parts] for the chorus."
It was during the penning of this tune that the band realized that recently added keyboardist Jordan Fish was having a big impact on their songwriting. Bassist Matt Kean told Sugarscape: "We had already had a list of the songs and Jordan took it away and worked on the choruses and stuff. It was like - I remember listening to it back once Jordan had put a different stamp on it and we were like 'Oh this is CRAZY!' and at the time, he wasn't even in the band, he was just writing with us. I think its this song was the point where we were all like 'It's time to do something about this.'"
The Sempiternal album was penned with a concept in its structure. Every single song represents a different realization and it was made to be like a journey. Sykes explained to AllMusic: "The first song is the first step, and the second song is the second step. You can't really listen to track six, and then listen to track one. You have to figure out the first step before you can figure out the next thing. We tried to make that connect in every aspect with the songs and music and how they blended into each other. It goes from heavy and then gives you a breather. The songs are meant to reflect the emotions as well. It's not just random. We wanted to make it a journey you wanted to start at the beginning and end at the end rather than just hear one or two songs or put it on 'shuffle.'
The first track, 'Can You Feel My Heart' is all about admittance," Sykes continued, "admitting you have a problem, and admitting something's wrong"
Can You Feel My Heart
Bring Me the Horizon Lyrics

Can you see the dark?
Can you fix the broken?
Can you feel, can you feel my heart?
(Can you feel my heart?)
Can you help the hopeless?
Well, I'm begging on my knees
Will you wait for me?
I'm sorry brothers
So sorry lover
Forgive me father
I love you mother
Can you hear the silence?
Can you see the dark?
Can you fix the broken?
Can you feel my heart?
Can you feel my heart?
(Can you feel my heart?)
Can you feel my heart?
I'm scared to get close and I hate being alone
I long for that feeling to not feel at all
The higher I get, the lower I'll sink
I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim
I'm scared to get close and I hate being alone
I long for that feeling to not feel at all
The higher I get, the lower I'll sink
I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim
I'm scared to get close and I hate being alone
I long for that feeling to not feel at all
The higher I get, the lower I'll sink
I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim
Can you feel my heart? Can you hear the silence?
Can you see the dark? Can you fix the broken?
Can you feel, can you feel my heart?
The opening lines of Bring Me the Horizon's 'Can You Feel My Heart' question whether the listener is able to pick upon the subtleties and nuances of emotion that are often left unsaid. The haunting melody and slow, heavy beats of the song set the tone for the ambiguous nature of the lyrics. The verse "Can you hear the silence? Can you see the dark? Can you fix the broken? Can you feel, can you feel my heart?" make use of rhetorical questions that could be interpreted in a number of ways. One reading suggests that the lead singer, Oli Sykes, is asking whether anyone is able to understand the pain and confusion that he is feeling or whether he is alone in his struggles.
The chorus repeats the same line three times, starting with "Can you feel my heart?" The repetition emphasizes the main question of the song and seeks an answer through means other than words. The second verse offers some insight into Sykes' state of mind. He proclaims that he is "scared to get close" and "hates being alone". This suggests a reluctance to open up and a fear of losing oneself in others. The chorus repeats once more, and the song ends on the bleak note that, "I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim".
Overall, 'Can You Feel My Heart' is a powerful song that explores the complexities of human emotion. Sykes' lyrics leave much open to interpretation but provide a haunting backdrop for the listener to project their own fears and anxieties onto.
