The lyrics of Bruce Low's "Gestern wollt ich beten geh'n" depict a conversation between the singer and the devil who attempts to prevent him from praying by telling him he is too young to pray. The singer, however, refuses to listen to the devil and states that he would rather pray quickly and often than be burned slowly in hell. He also tells the devil to read the 10th verse of the fourth chapter of Matthew if he wants to see him run away. The singer's determination to pray is accompanied by his desire to enter the golden gates of heaven and be surrounded by the music of golden harps played by ten gentle angels.
The song has a religious theme that focuses on the strength of faith even in the face of evil, which can be seen in the conversation between the singer and the devil. The devil's presence in the song highlights the idea of temptation, and the singer's determination to pray shows that he is willing to go through trials and hardships to achieve his ultimate goal.
