The 'In' Crowd
Bryan Ferry (with Roxy Music) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm in with the "in" crowd
I go where the "in" crowd goes
I'm in with the "in" crowd
And I know what the "in" crowd knows (how to have fun!)

Any time of the year, don't you hear? (how to have fun!)
Dressin' fine, makin' time
We breeze up and down the street
We get respect from people we meet

They make way day or night
They know the "in" crowd is out of sight
I'm in with the "in" crowd
I know every latest dance

When you're in with "in" crowd
It's easy to find romance (and we work out!)
At a spot where the beat's really hot (and we work out!)
If it's square we ain't there

We make every minute count
Our share is always the biggest amount
Other guys imitate us
But the original's still the greatest

We got our own way of walkin'
We got our way of talkin' (gotta have fun!)
Any time of the year, don't you hear (gotta have fun!)
Spendin' cash, talkin' trash

Girl, I'll show you a real good time
Come on with me and leave your troubles behind

I don't care where you've been
You ain't been nowhere till you been in with "in" crowd

Overall Meaning

Bryan Ferry's "The In Crowd" is a celebration of being in the coolest crowd of people. The "in" crowd goes wherever it wants, whenever it wants. This isn't just about being popular, but there's a sense of freedom and spontaneity that comes with belonging to this exclusive group. The song is a sonic evocation of the '60s era in which it was recorded, with the brass section and the organ dominating the soundscape. The funky and soulful sound captures the upbeat and carefree attitude of party-throwing crowds from the era.

Ferry's song is a tribute to the people who possess the ability to have fun, the ones who know how to dress fine, and they make every movement count. They have their unique way of walking and talking, which sets them apart from the rest. They know every latest dance, and they spend cash only on the important things - having fun and talking trash. Ferry speaks to the internal gratification of being part of this crowd, which others strive to imitate. Anywhere the group goes, they're met with respect, and people clear their path as they know the in-crowd is out of sight.

The In Crowd is almost like a love letter to a certain kind of group, a paean to the carefree and the stylish. The message is clear; if you want to have a good time, if you want to live like the cool kids, you need to be in with the in-crowd.

The best cover Bryan Ferry has ever done without a shadow of a doubt. He transforms the almost polite boastfulness of the original soul song into an adrenalin-soaked, aggressive anthem of stylish youthful arrogance and defiance. I bought this version when it was first released in the early 70s and I still find it utterly thrilling.

@jimpickard3850

Bryan Ferry is king of the cover version .. Dylan, Beatles, Lennon, Cole Porter, Smokey Robinson, many others all excellent. And this if course !

@pakora81

@@jimpickard3850 totally agree, every cover he has done is incredible. Jealous Guy is my favourite but this is a close second, along with Let's Stick Together

@filsgreen

It's up there're, but I'd go for "These foolish things", pure class and supreme production.

@jimpickard3850

@@filsgreen Yeah ... love when the line 'a tinkling piano in the next apartment' is accompanied by a tinkling piano ! Like you said, brilliant production.

@filsgreen

@@jimpickard3850 Total, Jim. I love the choral singers at the end. They finish far too early, wanting more
