Guy is known for his showmanship; for example, he plays with drumsticks and walks into the audience whilst playing, the latter being a gimmick he picked up from a local blues guitarist at an early age (joining or leaping into the audience has also long been common in both American popular and gospel music, as in the earlier work of Big Jay McNeely or the Dixie Hummingbirds).
Guy grew up in Louisiana where he learned to play guitar. In the early 1950s he began performing with bands in Baton Rouge. Soon after moving to Chicago in 1957, Guy fell under the influence of "Mighty" Muddy Waters. In 1958 he won a record contract with Artistic Records after beating the West Side guitarists Magic Sam and Otis Rush in a "Head Cutting Contest" at the Blue Flame Club. Soon afterwards he recorded for the Cobra label.
In the early 1960s, Guy was a session guitarist for Chess Records. He recorded on Junior Wells sessions for Delmark Records under the pseudonym Friendly Chap in 1965 and 1966. His career took off during a blues revival period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was sparked by Eric Clapton's request that Guy be part of the '24 nights' all-star blues guitar lineup at London's Royal Albert Hall and Guy's subsequent signing with Silvertone Records.
Black Night
Buddy Guy Lyrics

Oh how I hate to be alone
Black night is fallin'
Oh how I hate to be alone
I keep crying for my baby
And there ain't another day is gone
I have no one to talk with
My baby gone and left me
Someone tell me what more, what more can I do
Black night is fallin'
Oh how I hate to be alone
I keep crying for my baby
And there ain't another day is gone
Yeah
I have no one to talk with
To tell my trouble to
My brother's in Iraq
And I don't know, don't know what to do
Black night is fallin'
Oh how I hate to be alone
Keep crying for my baby
And there ain't another day is gone
Look at here
Goodbye baby
Oh God, I sure do hate to go
Goodbye baby, yeah
Oh God, I sure do hate to go
Buddy Guy's song "Black Night" is a classic blues tune that explores the emotions of loneliness and heartbreak. The song is driven by the repetitive and haunting melody that mimics the descent of a dark and lonely night. Buddy Guy opens the song by lamenting his loneliness and his hate for being alone, as the night falls. He expresses his pain and longing for his beloved, who has left him, and he feels like there is nobody to talk to or share his troubles with.
The song's emotional intensity increases as the verses progress, and Buddy Guy's voice becomes more desperate as he tries to find a way to cope with his heartache. In the last verse, he reveals that his brother is fighting in Iraq, and he feels helpless and alone, not knowing what to do. He ends the song with a sense of resignation, saying goodbye to his baby and confessing how much he hates to be alone.
The song's lyrics not only evoke personal heartache and loneliness but also a sense of vulnerability and powerlessness in the face of larger social and political issues. Buddy Guy's rendition of the song is a powerful expression of the African American blues tradition, which has always been a voice for the marginalized and oppressed.
