All those nights you paced the floor
Praying that I would make it home alright,
Believing in god that he would someday save my soul
Well he did, just thought you'd like too know.
Then I thought you'd like to know
All those prayers you prayed for me,
Sometimes it look like I was a million miles from grace
But he answered your prayers, just thought you'd like too know.
[Chorus]
Oh momma I want you to know I love you,
Please forgive my for all the times I broke your heart
Every tear you cried for me, drew me closer too being free,
And I want too thank you, just thought you'd like too know.
Then I thought you'd like too know
That I wish I could live my life again,
If I could, I would surely make amends,
And if I could help my brother,
A new life to discover, oh I would,
Just thought you'd like too know.
[Chorus]
The song "Mama" by Candi Staton is a tribute to her mother which expresses gratitude and repentance. The first verse starts with the singer telling her mother that all her sleepless nights waiting for her to come home were worth it. She acknowledges her mother's prayers for her and reveals that they didn't go unanswered. She states that her mother's unwavering faith in God saved her soul, and she expresses her gratitude for that.
In the second verse, Candi Staton continues to show her appreciation for her mother. She apologizes for the hurt she caused her mother and tells her that every time she cried, it drew her closer to freedom. She also lets her mother know that she wants to live her life differently and make up for her missteps. She expresses her desire to help her brother and give him a chance to start anew. The chorus comes as an expression of her deep love and respect for her mother.
Overall, the song is a beautiful tribute from a daughter to her mother. It shows the bond between the two, the mother's prayers and faith, and the daughter's regrets and hopes for the future. It's a song that reminds us of our own mothers, their sacrifices and their love for us.
