Staton sang with the Jewell Gospel Trio and as teenagers, they toured the traditional gospel circuit in the 1950s with The Soul Stirrers, C. L. Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson. They recorded several sides for Nashbro, Apollo[disambiguation needed ], and Savoy Records between 1953 and 1963, before launching a solo career in 1968.
She had 16 R&B hits for Fame Studios and received Grammy nominations for cover versions of country standards. In 1975 she started working with disco producer Dave Crawford and had hits "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Victim". Also, The Mighty Majors ("You Can Never Go Back") was her backup band once on the road.
In 1982 she returned to gospel forming Beracah Ministries with her husband John Sussewell. In 1991 she had a top 10 UK hit as The Source featuring Candi Staton with dance track "You Got The Love".
In 2004 when Sex and the City ended its successful six-year run, the last song played on that show was "You Got the Love" with Sarah Jessica Parker walking down New York City streets and talking about the endless relationship with herself.
Suspicious Minds
CANDI STATON Lyrics

We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And we can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
So, if an old friend I know
Drops by to say hello
Here we go again
Asking where I've been
You can't see these tears are real
I'm crying
We can't go on together
With suspicious minds
And be can't build our dreams
On suspicious minds
Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let's don't let a good thing die
When honey, you know
I've never lied to you
Mmm, yeah, yeah
The lyrics to Candi Staton's Suspicious Minds are narrated from the perspective of someone who is trying to save a relationship that is teetering on the brink due to a lack of trust. The song opens with the singer pleading with their partner to believe them, wondering why they continue to doubt everything they say. The chorus is a heartbreaking declaration that the couple can't move forward as long as they are plagued by suspicious minds. The second verse describes a scenario in which an old friend drops by, and the singer questions whether their partner will see only suspicion in their eyes. The verse leads into the next chorus, further emphasizing that the relationship can't survive without trust.
The final section of the song is a plea to save the relationship, acknowledging that tears have been shed and hurt feelings exist on both sides. The singer implores their partner to let love survive, to dry their tears and not let a good thing die. The final line of the song, "I've never lied to you," is a powerful statement of the singer's commitment to honesty and to making the relationship work.
