Money Money
Cabaret Lyrics

Money makes the world go around
The world go around
The world go around
Money makes the world go around
It makes the world go 'round

A mark, a yen, a buck, or a pound
A buck or a pound
A buck or a pound
Is all that makes the world go around
That clinking clanking sound
Can make the world go 'round

Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money

If you happen to be rich
And you feel like a night's entertainment
You can pay for a gay escapade (money money money money money money)

If you happen to be rich (money)
And alone, and you need a companion (money)
You can ring-ting-a-ling for the maid

If you happen to be rich (money)
And you find you are left by your lover (money)
Though you moan and you groan quite a lot (money money money money money money)
You can take it on the chin (money)
Call a cab and begin (money)
To recover on your fourteen carat yacht

Money makes the world go around
The world go around
The world go around
Money makes the world go around
Of that we can be sure
on being poor

Money money money
Money money money
Money money money
Money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money

Money money money
Money money money
Money money money
Money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money

If you haven't any coal in the stove
And you freeze in the winter
And you curse on the wind
At your fate
When you haven't any shoes
On your feet
And your coat's thin as paper
And you look thirty pounds
Underweight
When you go to get a word of advice
From the fat little pastor
He will tell you to love evermore
But when hunger comes a rap
Rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat at the window

At the window
Who's there?
Hunger
Ugh, hunger
See how love flies out the door for

Money makes the world go around
The world go around
The world go around
Money makes the go around
That clinking-clanking sound of
Money money money money money money
Money money money money money money
Get a little money money money money money money
Mark, a yen, a buck or a pound (money money money money money money)
That clinking clanking sound (money money money money money money)

Is all that makes the world go 'round (money money money money money money)
It makes the world go 'round

Overall Meaning

In "Money Money" from the musical Cabaret, the lyrics describe how money can control life and decisions, ultimately making the world go around. The song highlights how money can be used for entertainment, companionship, recovery, and survival. It also contrasts the wealthy and the poor, pointing out that money is not always available to everyone, and when it is scarce, it can lead to various consequences such as hunger and lovelessness. The repeated phrase "money money money" creates a sense of urgency, reflecting how money can become an obsession and a driving force in life.

Throughout the song, there is a clear distinction between those who have money and those who do not. The wealthy are presented as having a life of luxury, where they can pay for entertainment, companionship, and recovery on their "fourteen-carat yacht." In contrast, the poor face a life of hardship, where they may not have adequate resources to survive. The song suggests that money may also impact interpersonal relationships, highlighting how a person may be left by their lover, causing them to moan and groan before recovering on their yacht.

A mark, a yen, a buck or a pound

That clinking, clanking sound...
Can make the world go 'round
Money money money money
Money money money money
Money money money...
If you happen to rich
And you feel like a night's entertainment
You can pay for a gay escapade.
If you happen to be rich and alone
And you need a companion
You can ring (ting-a-ling) for the maid.
If you happen to be rich
And you find you are left by your lover,
And you moan and you groan quite a lot
You can take it on the chin,
Call a cab and begin to recover
On your 14-karat yacht! WHAT!?
Money makes the world go around
...the world go around
...the world go around.
Money makes the world go aroung
Of that we both are sure...
Rasberry sound on being poor!
Money money money money
Money money money money
Money money money...
When you haven't any coal in the stove
And you freeze in the winter
And you curse to the wind at your fate.
When you haven't any shoes on your feet,
Your coat's thin as paper,
And you look 30 pounds underweight
When you go to get a word of advice
From the fat little pastor,
He will tell you to love evermore.
But when hunger comes to rap,
Rat-a-tat rat-a-tat at the window
Knock knock (at the window)
Who's there? (hunger) oh, hunger!!
See how love flies out the door...
For, money makes the world go around
...the world go around
...the world go around.
Money makes the world go 'round
The clinking, clanking sound of...
Money money money money
Money money money money...
Get a little, get a little
Money money money money...
Mark, a yen, a buck or a pound,
That clinking, clanking, clunking sound,
Is all that makes the world go 'round,
It makes the world go 'round!

sashaqueenie Agree absolutely.  Wonderful performances by all round.  Boy, can Liza belt em out.   Cheers.

I can fully understand your appreciation, they're, both, amazing performers. Yet, I cannot agree that Liza deserved her Oscar. Liza couldn't even use a decent English accent. So, in order to still profit off her "star power", they chose to make Sally American and make Cliff English. Which makes absolutely no sense. Cliff's wide-eyed hopefulness and naiveté is distinctly American. His desire to get out and see the world and find inspiration for a novel makes sense, if he's traveling all the way from America. Instead, he's taken a 6 hr fairy from Hull and a days train ride. Don't forget that the Germans bombed the hell out of England so Cliff pleading with Sally to come with him for safety is, simply, retarded. Also.... Liza sang the role too well. If Sally was that good, she wouldn't be at the Kit Kat Klub. Have you read The Berlin Stories or I Am A Camera? Sally can't really sing, can't really dance, a pathological liar, as fake as can be. She's a complete mess.... but there just something about her that you can't live without. A childlike playfulness mixed with a naughty girl's rebellion. An innocent virgin crossed with a seasoned whore. I believe Cabaret is the perfect story and, therefore, the perfect play. It is equally demanding of Acting, Dancing, and Singing. You cannot skimp on any aspect, most importantly, the story and, thanks to Liza, the story was ruined. ".... the play's the thing. " Shakespeare was right 400 years ago and he's right today. You cannot honor the character if you dishonor the story.

***** thank you. What do you disagree with? I'd love to discuss it.
