Veloso is the fifth of the seven children born to José Telles Veloso ("Seu Zezinho") and Claudionor Vianna Telles Veloso ("Dona Canô"). His younger sister Maria Bethânia, another popular and renowned artist in Brazil, preceded him to fame as a singer in the mid-1960s. He began his career around 1965 singing bossa nova and he has cited his greatest musical influences from his early period as João Gilberto and Dorival Caymmi. (João Gilberto would say later about Caetano's contribution that it added an intellectual dimension to brazilian popular music.) But with such musical collaborators Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, Chico Buarque, and Os Mutantes, and greatly influenced by the later work of The Beatles, developed tropicalismo, which fused Brazilian pop with rock and roll and avant garde art music resulting in a more international, psychedelic, and socially aware sound. Veloso's politically active stance, unapologetically leftist, earned him the enmity of Brazil's military dictatorship which ruled until 1985; his songs were frequently censored, and some were banned. Veloso was also alienated from the socialist left in Brazil becasue of his acceptance and integration of non-nationalist influences (like rock and roll) in his music. Veloso and Gilberto Gil spent several months in jail for "anti-government activity" in 1968 and eventually exiled themselves to London. Caetano Veloso's work upon his return in 1972 was often characterized by frequent appropriations not only of international styles, but of half-forgotten Brazilian folkloric styles and rhythms as well. In particular, his celebration of the Afro-Brazilian culture of Bahia can be seen as the precursor of such Afro-centric groups as Timbalada.
In the 1980s, Veloso's popularity outside Brazil grew, especially in Israel, Portugal, France and Africa. By 2004, he was one of the most respected and prolific international pop stars, with more than fifty recordings available, including songs in soundtracks of movies such as Pedro Almodovar's Hable con Ella (Talk to Her), and Frida. In 2002 Veloso published an account of his early years and the Tropicalia movement, Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil.
His first all-English CD was A Foreign Sound (2004), which covers Nirvana's "Come as You Are" and compositions from the Great American Songbook. Five of the six songs on his third eponymous album, released in 1971, were also in English.
Chora tua tristeza
Caetano Veloso Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Foge do teu olhar
Brincando de esquecer
Saudade vai passar
E amor já vai chegar
Entao canta que a beleza
Volta pra te encantar
Que o dia escondeu
Guardando pra te dar
Como é bonito gostar e querer ficar
Com alguém pra quem possa dizer
Olha quantas estrelas
Nascem pra te encontrar
Depois do céu azul
A noite vai chegar
E eu pra te amar
The song Chora tua tristeza by Caetano Veloso reflects on the idea of dealing with sadness and longing for love. The lyrics encourage the listener to cry and let go of their sadness so that they can be open to love. The phrase "Chora que a tristeza foge do teu olhar" (Cry, for the sadness will flee from your eyes) suggests that crying can be a way to release negative emotions and make space for positive ones.
The lyrics also express the idea that beauty and love are linked. The line "Entao canta que a beleza volta pra te encantar" (So sing, for beauty will return to enchant you) implies that by focusing on beauty and joy, one can attract more of it into their life. The song reminds the listener that love is a powerful force that can bring light to even the darkest moments. The line "Depois do céu azul, A noite vai chegar, E eu pra te amar" (After the blue sky, night will come, and I [will be there] to love you) reinforces this idea, suggesting that even when things are difficult, love can provide comfort and support.
Overall, Chora tua tristeza is a hopeful song that encourages the listener to hold onto the possibility of love and to believe that it can transform even the most painful experiences.

Chora que a tristeza
Cry out all of your sorrows
Foge do teu olhar
So they don't cloud your vision
Brincando de esquecer
Playing at forgetting
Saudade vai passar
Your longing will eventually fade away
E amor já vai chegar
And love will arrive soon
Entao canta que a beleza
So sing, and beauty will return to enchant you
Volta pra te encantar
It will come back to captivate you
Num sonho tao pequenho
In a small dream
Que o dia escondeu
That the day hid away
Guardando pra te dar
Keeping it to give to you
Como é bonito gostar e querer ficar
How beautiful it is to love and want to stay
Com alguém pra quem possa dizer
With someone whom you can say to
Olha quantas estrelas
Look at how many stars
Nascem pra te encontrar
Were born to find you
Depois do céu azul
After the blue sky
A noite vai chegar
Night will come
E eu pra te amar
And I will be here to love you
