His debut studio album, I Created Disco, was released in June 2007. Its singles "Acceptable in the 80s" and "The Girls" both reached the top 10 in the UK. In 2009, he released his second studio album, Ready for the Weekend, which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and whose lead single, "I'm Not Alone", became his first song to top the UK Singles Chart.
In 2012, Harris rose to international prominence with the release of his third studio album, 18 Months, which topped the UK Albums Chart and became his first album to chart on the US Billboard 200, peaking at number 19. All eight of the album's singles reached the top 10 in the UK, breaking the record for the most top 10 songs from one studio album on the UK Singles Chart with eight entries, surpassing Michael Jackson's record. In 2014, he released his fourth studio album, Motion, which debuted at number two in the UK and number five in the US. In 2017, he released his fifth studio album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1, which reached the top two in the UK and the US and became his third consecutive number one album on the US Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
In October 2014, Harris became the first artist to place three songs simultaneously on the top 10 of Billboard's Dance/Electronic Songs chart. He also became the first UK solo artist to reach more than one billion streams on Spotify. Harris has received 18 Brit Award nominations–winning British Producer of the Year and British Single of the Year in 2019, as well as five Grammy nominations, including a win for Best Music Video in 2013. In 2013 he also received a Ivor Novello Award, and was named the Top Dance/Electronic Artist at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards. He appeared on Debrett's 2017 list of the most influential people in the United Kingdom. He topped Forbes' list of the world's highest-paid DJs for six consecutive years from 2013 to 2018 until being dethroned by The Chainsmokers in 2019.
Lovers In A Past Life
Calvin Harris Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Feels like I've been waiting for a lifetime
For lightning to strike me
Daydreams
Feels like I've been sending out the signals
Hoping that you'll find me
I don't need the detail, you don't need to tell me
You and me
We were lovers in a past life
Slow dancin' in the midnight glow
I wanna hold you for a lifetime
For all we know
And these are familiar places
And maybe we're not just strangers
You and me
We were lovers in a past life
For all we know
Distance
Only ever makes the heart grow stronger
Late at night, I wonder
Were you thinkin' of me
In someone else's arms? (Oh)
Does that feel like it's meant to be?
You and me
We were lovers in a past life
Slow dancin' in the midnight glow
I wanna hold you for a lifetime
For all we know
And these are familiar places
And maybe we're not just strangers
You and me
We were lovers in a past life
For all we know
We were lovers
(I wanna hold you for a lifetime)
The lyrics of "Lovers In A Past Life" by Calvin Harris delve into the themes of patience, daydreams, connection, and distance in relationships. The singer expresses a sense of waiting for a significant event or moment to happen, symbolized by waiting for "lightning to strike." This waiting is contrasted with the daydreams and signals being sent out in the hopes of being found by the other person. The feeling that one already knows where the other person will be hints at a deep connection or understanding between the two.
The idea of being lovers in a past life is introduced as a romantic notion that transcends time and space. The imagery of slow dancing in the midnight glow evokes a sense of intimacy and nostalgia for a love that feels familiar yet unattainable in the present. The desire to hold onto this connection for a lifetime reflects a longing for permanence and stability in a relationship that may have existed across lifetimes.
The mention of distance in the lyrics emphasizes the challenge and emotional strain that can come with being physically apart from someone you care about. The singer wonders if the other person is thinking of them in someone else's arms, highlighting the insecurity and doubt that can arise in long-distance relationships. Despite the distance, there is a belief that it only strengthens the bond between them, suggesting that love can endure even when separated.
The repetition of the phrase "You and me, we were lovers in a past life" reinforces the idea of a deep soul connection that transcends time and space. The acknowledgment of familiar places and the possibility that they are not just strangers hints at a shared history or connection that goes beyond the present moment. Ultimately, the longing to hold onto each other for a lifetime encapsulates the yearning for a love that feels destined and eternal, even if it exists in memories of a past life.
