He started gaining recognition in Portugal in 1979 after winning the "Grande Noite do Fado" (Great Fado Night). After this first step, the true "alfacinha" (inhabitant of Lisbon) consistently worked his way up with well accepted records and great shows at places ranging from small "Casas de Fado" (Fado clubs) in Lisbon as well as sold out audiences throughout Europe in some of the most prestigious festivals and venues. Camane was formerly married to another great fadista, Aldina Duarte.
He has released five albums: "Uma Noite de Fados" (1995), "Na Linha da Vida" (1998) marking the beginning of three records produced by José Mário Branco, "Esta Coisa da Alma" (2000), "Pelo Dia Dentro" (2001) and "Como sempre... Como dantes" (live in 2003). These have been released in several european and asian countries. He has been distinguished with several awards for his voice and talent.

Foram-te longe encerrar
Por teu livre pensamento
Foram-te longe encerrar
Tão longe que o meu lamento
Não te consegue alcançar
E apenas ouves o vento
Levaram-te a meio da noite
A treva tudo cobria
Levaram-te a meio da noite
A treva tudo cobria
Foi de noite numa noite
De todas a mais sombria
Foi de noite, foi de noite
E nunca mais se fez dia.
Ai! Dessa noite o veneno
Persiste em me envenenar
Ai! Dessa noite o veneno
Persiste em me envenenar
Oiço apenas o silêncio
Que ficou em teu lugar
E ao menos ouves o vento
E ao menos ouves o mar.
E ao menos ouves o vento
E ao menos ouves o mar.
The lyrics of Camané's song "Abandono" are a poetic expression of the pain, loss, and longing that come with the abandonment of a loved one. The song tells the story of someone who was taken away "far off" by their own free will or choice, leaving the singer to grieve in solitude. The opening lines "Por teu livre pensamento / Foram-te longe encerrar" convey the idea that the person has been taken away because of their own thoughts, beliefs, or desires. This suggests that their departure was voluntary, perhaps in pursuit of some dream or aspiration that the singer couldn't share or understand.
The second verse describes how the person was taken away in the middle of the night, under the cover of darkness. The repetition of "Foi de noite, foi de noite" reinforces the sense of loss and uncertainty, as if the darkness has cast a permanent shadow over the singer's life. The final verse expresses the singer's ongoing agony and sense of isolation: "Oiço apenas o silêncio / Que ficou em teu lugar." The absence of the loved one is emphasized by the fact that all the singer can hear is the wind and the sea, as if nature is the only witness to their pain.
Overall, Camané's lyrics capture the intense emotions of abandonment and the sense of being left behind by someone who has chosen a different path. The imagery of the sea, the wind, and the darkness adds to the sense of longing and melancholy, as if the singer is stranded on a shore, watching as the person they love sails away into the distance.
