1. In the summer of 1998, longtime friends and bandmates William Seidel, Ryan Weber and Brian Zimmerman met with Eric Osterman and founded the Milwaukee band Camden. Soon after forming, Camden recorded their first EP with Chris Rosenau (Pele, Collections of Colonies of Bees, Telecognac, and Lumis) in the spring of 1999 and began touring in support of their self-titled EP with bands such as Pele, The Gloria Record and Antarctica.
Soon afterwards, the band recorded a follow-up EP called Fall In An Overcoat in the fall, and completed several US tours that year. In December of 1999, they recorded the very well received Reel Time Canvas (released on Grand Theft Autumn) with Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie). Throughout the year 2000, Camden continuously toured with Death Cab For Cutie and then The Promise Ring while headlining a few tours of their own.
After recording 4 of the 6 tracks that were to become part of Pieces of Places with Chris Walla in Seattle, Camden suffered a few setbacks- Eric fell in love with a girl he met on the road and quit the band to marry her. The 6 tracks that Camden had recorded before the break-up sat for almost a year before Ed Menacho, Chris Strong and Joe Wigdahl were prompted to form Brilliante Records in order to release the EP and give it the attention they thought that it deserved.
Camden is no longer a functioning band, however, you can still hear William Seidel & Ryan Weber with their later creations: Decibully & New Sense.
2. Camden is a Belgian band founded on the ashes of Ashbury Faith by the famous flemish bassist Axl Peleman, together with Michael Schack on drums and Mario Pesic on guitar.
Their first album was recorded in 2001 and contains songs such as "Black Paper, Black Ink" and "Snapshot". They have since released 2 more albums.
Axl Peeleman is also a regular on Belgian TV and can be seen as the basist of the Kreuners, replacing Berre Bergen on their 30th anniversary tour.
3. Solo project from one of the members of Daughters of the Sun, Cole Weiland. Under his moniker, Camden, he creates synth-heavy music (and more, d'oh). First release, Life of Devotion, on Moon Glyph in 2010.
Black Paper
Camden Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That it's a black paper written on with black ink
Now let me tell you one thing about what you said
I'd rather die than to have you here in my bed
Yeah try to stand up
While your face is nailed
To the floor
To feel what I've felt before
But I loved you when you left me
Yes I loved you when you left me
I loved you when you left me
Yeah loved you when you left me
Don't criticize my two packs of smokes a day
You don't even know how to spell ashtray
Don't like your mother don't like her one bit
She says vegetarians are stupid
She says vegetarians are stupid
In Camden's song Black Paper, the lyrics talk about a relationship that has gone wrong due to misunderstandings and criticisms. The first line "And I hate what you told me 'bout what I think" indicates that the singer doesn't appreciate being told what to think or how to feel. The second line "That it's a black paper written on with black ink" indicates that the things the singer thinks or feels are being dismissed or not taken seriously.
The chorus "But I loved you when you left me" seems paradoxical but could indicate that despite being hurt or wronged, the singer still had love for their partner. The last line "She says vegetarians are stupid" reveals a possible source of conflict - a disapproving and intolerant mother figure who judges people based on their lifestyle choices.
The imagery in the verse "Yeah try to stand up while your face is nailed to the floor" is intense and visceral, indicating a sense of being stuck or trapped. The line "Don't criticize my two packs of smokes a day, you don't even know how to spell ashtray" suggests a defensive attitude and a feeling of being judged unfairly.
Overall, the lyrics of Black Paper create a picture of a relationship that has deteriorated due to a lack of understanding, criticism, and conflicting values. The chorus, however, suggests that despite the pain and hurt caused, there is still a sense of love and attachment towards the partner.
