Nervous Young Inhumans
Car Seat Headrest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You should've seen my cursive back then
Every letter was above the line
My ps and qs raised their stems
So nothing crossed beneath
I'm a little better now

You never lifted your voice
You never raised your hand
You never showed me your inhuman
You understand

Art gets what it wants and art gets what it deserves

Most people are jokes but you're so real
Most of the time that I use the word "you"
Well you know that I'm mostly singing about you

You swore you'd never use the face that your ex invented
So let's meet up in uncanny valley

You never lifted your voice
You never raised your hand
I only show you my inhuman
You understand

You'll get what you want and you'll get what you deserve
You'll get what you want and you'll get what you deserve

I'm a good person, I'm a powerful person
I don't believe in evil
I think that evil is an idea created by others to avoid dealing with their own nature
I understand my own nature
Good and evil have nothing to do with it
I understand myself, I control myself
I control everything within myself
My domain is my domain
I can lie on my back and affect the lives of those I love without moving a finger
But I would only affect them in good ways
I don't waste time on evil
I'm a good person
Is this thing on?
Do you know about Jesus?
Do you really know?
All you know is what you've been told
Listen with your heart, sing with your heart
You've just been singing about girls
What do you know about girls? Fuck
Why are you so tense?
You've gotta start singing with love in your heart, is this on?
Adam, are you here?
A pain star has entered your house, but what are you going to do about it?
Are you going to touch it? It only once happens every thousand years, maybe even two thousand years
And how long is a year, really?
It's almost Halloween
I haven't done shit this year
It's been a summer, it's been summer since February, I was in Australia
God, California? Then what? June, July, August, a month in Europe
I can't even go to Ikea anymore, I've got flashbacks, fuck
You should see the lights that I got there, I think you'd like them
I think you'd like them a lot

Isn't this where

Overall Meaning

we came in?
The lyrics to "Nervous Young Inhumans" are somewhat elusive and difficult to interpret at first glance. The song addresses themes such as self-awareness, authenticity, and the struggle to define oneself in the face of social pressure. At the beginning of the song, the singer reflects on their past and their present. They compare their previous handwriting to their current one, suggesting that they have grown and improved as a person.

The singer then talks about an individual who has never shown them their "inhuman." This could be a reference to the mask that people may wear to hide their true selves or perhaps an allusion to the idea of being inhuman or non-human. The phrase "you never lifted your voice / you never raised your hand" could mean that this person has never shown any aggression or negative behavior towards the singer, or perhaps that they have never shown their true selves.

The final part of the song is a mish-mash of various thoughts and ideas, ranging from musings on good and evil to personal anecdotes about travel and home decor. It's possible that this section is meant to illustrate the scattered, disjointed nature of the singer's thoughts and further emphasize the theme of self-discovery and change.

from the 2011 version of nervous young inhumans:

"in the song I use the term 'galvanistic'. Galvanism is the concept…the
obsolete scientific theory that there was a kind of electricity flowing
through our bloodstreams and that was our life force. I used the term
because I came across it in Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’. And that book
is sort of an exploration of the theme of creating a character, of
making up a person. So I used the term 'galvanistic' to allude to that
book, as a sort of symbol of how I, like, created you as a character,
and I’m pretending that I know a lot more about you than I actually do.
And also to refer to the fact that I’ve fallen in love with the
characters you’ve created in, uh, your body of work"

Earlier in the song I used the term "galvanistic," and galvanism is the concept, uh, the obsolete scientific theory that there is a kind of electricity flowing through our bloodstreams, and that was our life force. I used the term because I came across it in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", and that book is sort of an exploration of the theme of creating a character or making up a person. So I used the term "galvanistic" to allude to that book as a sort of symbol of how I, like, created you as a character, by pretending that I know a lot more about you than I actually do, and also to refer to the fact that I've fall—fallen in love with the characters you've created in, uh, your body of work. This is the part of the song where I start to regret writing it

@gyroscope2181

i guess he REALLY regretted writing it cause he changed it smh

@rodrigotorres86

J Sutton he changed it because "galvanistic" is not even a real word lmao

@gyroscope2181

Galvanistic is a real word, it's just obsolete.

@rodrigotorres86

It's not real fam. Even Will said that's why he changed it. The real word is "galvanic".

@loutubesing3213

I love how Will accidentally raps that first line to the beat lol
