The Sighting Is a Portent of Doom
Carach Angren Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the age of electricity and oil,
my tugboat ploughs through waveless liquid soil.
Cruising at thirteen knots on a pitch black sea.
There's a strange object on the radars
in front of me. Still nothing I can see.
Just an open dreary sea...

Several attempts to contact that
what appeared to be the size of a ship.
No response 'till I receive
transmissions of hostile nature.
These voices cursing my goddamn name.
Hell, is this witchcraft or am I insane?

All of a sudden a dark silhouette
ascends through ghostlike mist.
While it comes closer, I recognize
the image of an old deserted ship.

I am aghast at the sight of a derelict vessel
sailing this awkward night, appearing like a black
floating cadaver. There's not one single man aboard.
Her torn sails cloaking her like a cobwebbed widow,
posing against this sad nightmarish horizon.

The temperature suddenly dropped.
My great-grandfathers clock, just ticking, now stopped.
I am smothered by a sudden shroud of fear.
For there's a ghost ship 'pon a funereal quest.
With a black bird circling hypnotic
around its rocking empty crow's nest.

Fortunately this atrocious mystery sets sail away from me.
Some sailors claim other seamen beheld such sights.
Most died weird deaths during fog-clad days and nights.

The ship vanished as suddenly as it appeared.
Should I feel fear? Was it even here?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Carach Angren's song "The Sighting Is a Portent of Doom" narrate the encounter of a sailor with an eerie phenomenon in the middle of the sea. The scene is set in a time when electricity and oil were already present, but the vessel is moving through unnaturally calm and dark waters. It is then that the radars pick up something that looks like a ship, but no visible structure appears around them. The sailor attempts to communicate with it, but he only receives hostile messages that make him question his sanity.

Out of nowhere, a dark silhouette appears, obscured by mist and ghost-like. The vessel gets closer, and to the sailor's horror, it turns out to be an old abandoned ship, floating aimlessly in the void. The description is of a ghostly, funereal vessel, looking like a blackened cadaver, with torn sails fluttering in the wind as if trying to wrap the ship like a spiderweb. No one is on board, and the only living creature around is a black bird circling and hypnotizing the empty crow's nest. Suddenly, the temperature drops, and an atmosphere of dread surrounds the sailor as the ship sails towards him.

In the end, the ship goes away as suddenly as it came, leaving the sailor wondering if everything was just in his mind. The song also references other sailors seeing similar apparitions and dying in foggy situations, making the listener understand that this haunting scene is a bad sign of something ominous.

Wtf is wrong with people these days! Arguing about music being gay and about not using the right words!

Just enjoy the music and if you don't like it then just listen something else.

Anyway, just wanted to say that i like the music video and really love every single song of them!

(Btw: i'm Dutch and really proud that Carach Angren is too)

Y'all have a nice day!

Peace out,

John

10 years later and this whole album is still incredible

Just A Ghost

CRIMINALLY underrated band. I remember talking to them on Myspace when they uploaded the demo version of Haunting Echoes.

Wretched Slippage

They were! their first 3 albums are so good but then they became a Disney horror band.

Valar Morghulis

One of the greatest openings in any metal track.

Josh Teixeira

That fucking expression on the drummer's face is perfect.

Brandon Hughes

+Josh Teixeira I just saw them live last week. The drummer had that look on his face the whole set. Priceless.

Jim bob

+Josh Teixeira Hmmm its a little cheesy really and over done.

Josh Teixeira

Jim bob LOL how is it overdone?

Jim bob

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm new to this band and like the music. It is just the expression is laughable and see through. If that is what he wanted to accomplish job well done. Evil no, just trying a little to hard, but then most Black metal type bands do when it comes to videos.

Josh Teixeira

Jim bob ...Yeah, something tells me he wasn't trying to look evil LMAO!
