In May 2007 Caro Emerald got a phonecall from Dutch producers Jan van Wieringen and David Schreurs. With another producer, they'd written a song for a Japanese pop act with the acclaimed songwriter Vince Degiorgio (Atomic Kitten, A-Teens, N'Synch, Love Inc. a.o.). But their demo singer couldn't make it. They needed something quickly, and that's how Caro got to record the demo of "Back It Up".
Caro liked the song so much that she added it to her live repertoire. A year later she got the chance to perform "Back It Up" on local TV station AT5 in Amsterdam. It caught on right away: viewers just wouldn't stop calling and e-mailing about that lovely girl with her catchy song. Caro and a friend produced a no budget video which ended up on Youtube, and again, the response was overwhelming. People literally begged her to sell the song on iTunes.
But with only one song on the repertoire, Caro and her team decided to focus on a full album first. Inspired by films and music from the 40's and 50's they started working on new songs and ideas. Fall 2008, David flew over to Toronto to write with Degiorgio, and returned with 7 great tracks and a clear direction for the album. A few months later, Vince came to Amsterdam to finish the album. The result: an exciting and hugely accessible record, featuring ballroom jazz, cinematic tangoes, groovin' jazz tracks and infectious mambo's that sound like they were recorded in 1951 in Hollywood's most famous recording studios. But the smoking beats, catchy songs and inventive production tell it's actually 2009 that Caro Emerald is putting her name on the map.

Down the road to both of you
Did I go Dutch?
This is too much!
With all the money in the world
You could never buy this girl
Quite enough
It will be tough
Make the letters write in luminous, and blue
And get me waking up
Shake it up, tangled up
You could be breaking up, making up, tangled up
You can't be faking it, making it from my love
With all this tragedy, don't get me tangled up
I can't separate your sins,
To me you're acting like you're twins, this is a mess
Is this a test?
How many guesses do I get?
Till only one of you is left
You're quite the same,
If love's the gain
I want to see emotions coloring the sky
To the point it will make me wanna cry
And get me waking up
Shake it up, tangled up
You could be breaking up, making up, tangled up
You can't be faking it, making it from my love
With all this tragedy, don't get me tangled up
Tangled up
Treating girls like a yo-yo
Is a no no of monumental kind
If playing with your string
Happens to be your thing
It's easy to say to both, oh nevermind
And get me waking up
Shake it up, tangled up
You could be breaking up, making up, tangled up
You can't be faking it, making it from my love
With all this tragedy, don't get me tangled up
Oh oh tangled up
Oh oh tangled up
Oh oh tangled up
Oh oh tangled up
In "Tangled Up," Caro Emerald sings about being in a love triangle with two men who are alike and difficult to differentiate between. She wonders if they are playing games with her and treating her like a toy. She expresses her desire for them to show emotions and love in a meaningful way, not just through neon signs and fake displays of affection. The chorus emphasizes her confusion and mixed emotions, with the repetition of "waking up, shaking it up, breaking up, making up, tangled up." This reflects the tangled web of emotions and decisions she finds herself in.
The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a woman who is struggling to navigate a complicated relationship. The imagery of neon lights and colorful skies reflects her desire for something authentic and heartfelt, rather than something flashy or superficial. The repetition of "tangled up" throughout the song reinforces the idea that she is caught in a messy, confusing situation.
Overall, "Tangled Up" is a powerful commentary on the difficulties of love and relationships, and the emotions that come with them.

I took the perfect avenue,
I tried to find my way in a manner that seems the best to me
Down the road to both of you
I followed the path towards both of you
Did I go Dutch?
Did I pay my share?
This is too much!
This is overwhelming
With all the money in the world
No amount of money
You could never buy this girl
Can make me do your bidding
Quite enough
More than suffice
It will be tough
It's going to be a challenge
If romancing me with neons is something you should do
If wooing me with flashy lights is what you think will work
Make the letters write in luminous, and blue
Then make the letters vivid blue and bright.
And get me waking up
Wake me up
Shake it up, tangled up
Stir things up, make it complex and problematic
You could be breaking up, making up, tangled up
You might break up or make up with one another while not knowing what you do to me
You can't be faking it, making it from my love
You shouldn't be pretending from the love I offer
With all this tragedy, don't get me tangled up
In all of this drama, don't confuse me
I can't separate your sins,
I can't distinguish your faults
To me you're acting like you're twins, this is a mess
The way you’re behaving, it's like you’re identical twins, and it’s quite messy
Is this a test?
Is this all just an exam, a trial?
How many guesses do I get?
How many chances am I entitled to?
Till only one of you is left
Until only one of you remains
You're quite the same,
You're virtually identical
If love's the gain
If love is the prize
I want to see emotions coloring the sky
I want to see the sky painted with our passion
To the point it will make me wanna cry
So much that I’ll be moved to tears
Treating girls like a yo-yo
Playing with a woman's heart
Is a no no of monumental kind
Is something that should never happen
If playing with your string
If manipulating people is your thing
Happens to be your thing
If it is what you do and that's not right
It's easy to say to both, oh nevermind
It's easy for me to say to both of you – Oh, forget it.
Oh oh tangled up
Oh oh, it's complicated
Oh oh tangled up
Oh oh, it's problematic
Oh oh tangled up
Oh oh, it's getting out of hand
Oh oh tangled up
Oh oh, the drama is just too much

Enroscada
Eu peguei a avenida perfeita, no caminho para ambos
Eu falei grego?
Isso é demais!
Com todo o dinheiro do mundo
Você nunca poderia comprar esta menina
O suficiente, vai ser difícil
Se me namorar com neons é algo que você deve fazer
Que as letras sejam brilhosas e iluminadas e azuis
E me deixe acordada
Remexida
Enroscada
Você poderia estar terminando, inventando
Enroscada
E me deixe acordada
Remexida
Enroscada
Você poderia estar terminando, inventando
Enroscada
E me deixe acordada
Remexida
Enroscada
Você poderia estar terminando, inventando
Enroscada
Você não pode estar fingindo isso,
Inventando isso para o meu amor
Depois desta tragédia, não me deixe enroscada

Isn't it wonderful? All this cultures mixed up: a beautiful Dutch lady who happened to own such a lovely voice, singing in a classic 40's-50's style with some Argentine Tango in it... We love you so much Miss Emerald!! <3
