King's major success began in the 1960s when she and her first husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote more than two dozen chart hits, many of which have become standards, for numerous artists. She has continued writing for other artists since then. King's success as a performer in her own right did not come until the 1970s, when she sang her own songs, accompanying herself on the piano, in a series of albums and concerts. After experiencing commercial disappointment with her debut album Writer, King scored her breakthrough with the album Tapestry, which topped the U.S. album chart for 15 weeks in 1971 and remained on the charts for more than six years.
King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years. Her record sales were estimated at more than 75 million copies worldwide. She has won four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She has been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a performer and songwriter. She is the recipient of the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, the first woman to be so honored. She is also a 2015 Kennedy Center Honoree.

You're Something New
Carole King Lyrics

Retreating through the past
You reached out to find me
And brought me back at last
You've shown me something
Beyond my looking glass
Now loce's in my reflection
In the shadow that you cast on me, and you
You're something new
Under the sun
Under the moon,
You're the light of creation
And I knew
That I'd come to love you
Life seemed oh so temporary
A case of "here and gone"
And I survived just barely
Until you came along
But now each day I'm given
Is one more day I know
A love that's so unselfish
It's a pleasure just to show my love to you
You're something new
You're something new
Under the sun
Under the moon
You're the light of creation
The opening lines of Carole King's song 'You're Something New' suggest a journey through time and space as the singer 'retreats through the past'. In contrast, the song's subject reaches out to them, making them feel safe and loved. The imagery of 'my looking glass' implies that the singer has been brought back to the present moment, where they see love's reflection in the shadow that the subject casts on them. The subject is described as 'something new', implying that they are special and unique.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase 'you're something new' multiple times, emphasizing the importance of this idea. The subject is compared to the light of creation, suggesting that they are a force of nature or a divine presence in the singer's life. The singer claims that they knew they would come to love the subject, suggesting that their feelings are inevitable and meant to be. The singer's previous experiences of life being 'temporary' and feeling like they had just 'survived' until the subject came along, suggests that the subject has given their life new meaning and purpose.
Overall, 'You're Something New' is a celebration of the power of love to transform lives and bring meaning to existence. The subject is seen as a unique and powerful force in the singer's life, bringing light and love to every moment. This song is a testament to the transformative power of love and how it can bring new life to even the darkest moments.
