The Naming Of Cats
Cats Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It isn't just one of your holiday games
You may think that I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you a cat must have three different names
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo, or James
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Baily -
All of them sensible, everyday names
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible, everyday names
But I tell you a cat needs a name that's particular
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo or Coricopat
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum -
Names that never belong to more than one cat
But above and beyond there's still one name left over
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover
But the cat himself knows, and will never confess
When you notice a cat in profound meditation
The reason, I tell you , is always the same
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name
His ineffable, effable, effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular name
Name, name, name, name, name, name
In the song "The Naming of Cats" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats, the singer speaks of the importance of giving cats not just one name, but three. The first name should be a practical one that family members use daily, such as Peter, James, or Alonzo. The second name should be a fancier one, like Electra or Admetus, and the third should be a particular and dignified name that only that cat possesses.
The third name, the singer explains, is crucial for a cat's sense of identity and self-worth. It is a name that the cat itself knows and never discloses to humans. The song suggests that this name is ineffable and inscrutable, underscoring that a cat's true essence can never be fully understood by its human companions.

They didn’t even TRY to avoid the creepiness for this one. They leaned in
@rachelawesomerach1115
Weird
@ashlynnheller8400
I think thats why it works.
@nurailidepaepe2783
it's great.
@b.d6642
In my opinion this whole scene is weird on purpose because they present the jellicles to the audience as a whole new world, and as the show progresses we see the jellicles in a much more "human" light, as something more familiar, at first these all look like creepy weirdos but then so many if them get depth or character personalities that make them unique
@Annahg78
I know right! 😂🤣
@Ngamotu83
This is different from when it's performed in front of an audience. Because the last time I saw Cats, they came out into the aisles and performed this number while positioned amongst the seats.
@merkules6
This was in 1998... So no of course it's different. The choreography isn't the same in every production, you see.
@princenaemon
@@merkules6 It was the same in 1998. It's just they couldn't portray the same choreography in this version because there wasn't an actual audience.
@kirstysmith5187
I did this in a production of it!
