Chapter 14 was formed in 2003 by Chad Ackerman (Destroy The Runner, Die Trying, As I Lay Dying, and Austrian Death Machine). Other members in the band were Tanner Sparks on guitar (Destroy The Runner), Mike Catalano on drums (Chiodos and Destroy The Runner), Noah Slifka on guitar (In Fear & Faith), and Eddie Hudson on bass (Paper Mache).
The band never released an album, but did two U.S. tours on their own. They also recorded several demos without a label or financial backing. In 2007, after trying for so long to make a full length album and to score a record deal, the band split up.
Chad Ackerman and Tanner Sparks then went on to join Destroy The Runner (Solid State Records). Mike Catalano started teaching for Jordan Mancino (As I Lay Dying) and later went on to drum for the bands Chiodos and Destroy The Runner. Noah Slifka became In Fear & Faith's (Rise Records) lead guitarist. Eddie Hudson moved on to play bass for the band Paper Mache. In 2010, Destroy The Runner went on an indefinite hiatus. Chad and Tanner decided to start up Chapter 14 again. As of then, they are the only permanent members of Chapter 14. Both Chad and Tanner recorded and asked the original Chapter 14 line up to help with this process. On November 30, 2010 they released an EP called 'Like Trees In November'. And later on 'The Bad Shephard' as a single. As of September 2022, both their EP and demos are on Spotify for the world to listen to.

Chapter 14 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
This story is ending.
Fill this page, we'll mop it once destroyed.
Empty your organs, little girls and little boys.
Take us all, all of us who we are.
All of us, and take these things, that you see, well all of these things.
Pass the great matron of desire.
Will just a little more will make you more?
Will just a little bit make you way more than you, you could be with me?
Will just a little bit make you see?
Will just a little dark make you...
Turn the page? What do you see?
This story is ending.
Fill this page, we'll mop it once destroyed.
Empty your organs, little girls and little boys.
Turn the page, what do you see?
This story is ending.
Fill this page, we'll mop it once destroyed.
Empty your organs, little girls and little boys.
We, we are life.
We, we are dead.
We, we are blood.
We, we are flesh.
We, we are dead, there is nothing left.
We are the ones who have cussed, and the ones who have blessed.
Sing ah ah ah, ah ah ah ahh.
Sing ah ah ah, ah ah ah ahh.
Sing ah ah ah, ah ah ah ahh.
Sing ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ahh.
Leave these veins, leave these veins.
The song Moth & Rust by Chapter 14 has some relatively complex and thought-provoking lyrics that are open to interpretation. The beginning of the song invites the listener to turn the page and see the end of a story, which can be interpreted as a metaphor for the end of something significant in someone's life, whether that be a relationship, a belief system, or something else. The following lines suggest the idea of destruction, and the possibility of starting anew once everything has been ruined. The mention of organs, specifically those belonging to "little girls and little boys," could be seen as an allegory for the importance of vulnerability and innocence in the process of transformation.
The lyrics then turn to address an unknown entity that is being asked to "take us all." It is unclear who this entity is, but this line can be interpreted as a plea for someone or something to take a group of people, as opposed to an individual, to a new place or state of being. The following lines mention a "great matron of desire" whose significance is again left up to interpretation. The idea of being "justified" after encountering this matron implies that the search for something, whether that be love, understanding, or something else, has finally been found.
Overall, the lyrics of this song are vague enough to be interpreted differently by the listener. However, the overall theme seems to be about the end of something significant, destruction, and the possibility of transformation towards something new.
