Do It Again
Charles Mann Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the morning, you go gunning, for the man, who stole your water.
And you fire 'till he's done in, but they catch you at the border.
And the mourners all are singing, as they drag you by your feet…….
But the Hangman isn't hanging, and they put on the street.

You go back, Jack; Jack, do it again…….
Wheel turning 'round and 'round.
Wheel keep turning
You go back, Jack, do it again.

Well you know she's no high climber, then you find, your only friend
In a room with your two timer, and you're sure you're near the end,
Then you love a little wild one, and she brings you only sorrow
All the time you know she's smiling, you'll be on your knees tomorrow

You go back, jack, Jack, do it again.
Wheel turning 'round and 'round.
Wheel keep turning
You go back, Jack, do it again.

Now you swear and kick and beg us, that you're not a gambling man;
Then you find you're back in Vegas with a handle in your hand;
Your black cards can make you money, so you hide them when you're able
But In the land of milk and honey you must put them on the table

You go back, Jack, do…… it again.
Wheel turning 'round and 'round.
Wheel keep turning
You go back, Jack, do it again.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Charles Mann's song "Do It Again" tell a story of a person stuck in a cycle of repeating their mistakes. The opening lines describe a man seeking revenge on someone who has wronged him, but ultimately being caught and facing consequences for his actions. Despite this, he continues down the same path, indicated by the repeated phrase "you go back, Jack, do it again." The person's actions are portrayed as a wheel that keeps turning, never fully breaking the cycle.

The following verse describes a different scenario, where the person finds themselves in a situation where they have been betrayed by someone they trusted. They then fall for another woman, but their happiness is short-lived as they know it will end in heartbreak. The chorus is repeated again, emphasizing the notion that the cycle is never-ending. The final verse shows the person's descent into gambling, despite previously trying to convince others that they were not a "gambling man." They return to Vegas and win money through their "black cards," but are eventually forced to face their actions in the "land of milk and honey."

Overall, the song speaks to the human tendency to fall into patterns and repeat mistakes, despite the negative consequences. The wheel metaphor throughout the song signifies the cyclical nature of these mistakes, and the repeated chorus reinforces the idea that it can be difficult to break free.
