I wore my forty-four so long, I've made my shoulder sore
I wore my forty-four so long, I done made my shoulder sore
Well, I'm wondrin' everybody, where'd my baby go?

Well, I'm so mad this mornin', I don't know where in the world to go
Well, I'm so mad this mornin', I don't know where in the world to go
Well, I'm lookin' for me some money, pawned gun to have some gold

Overall Meaning

The song "Forty-Four" by Charley Patton is a blues lamentation about a man who is feeling lost and alone after his woman has left him. The title of the song refers to the singer's gun, a .44 caliber revolver, which he has worn on his shoulder for so long that it has become a physical burden. His loneliness and frustration are evident in the repetition of the line "I'm wondrin' everybody, where'd my baby go?" which is both a literal reference to his missing lover and a more general expression of confusion and despair.

The second stanza continues in the same vein, with the singer expressing his anger and confusion at his situation. He doesn't know where to turn or what to do, and he is looking for money to buy some gold, perhaps as a way to feel better about himself or to prove his worth to his lost love. The lyrics are delivered in Patton's characteristic style, with a raw, powerful voice and a strong sense of rhythm and timing.

Overall, "Forty-Four" is a classic example of the blues genre, with its focus on personal loss and hardship, its use of repetition and symbolism, and its reliance on a strong vocal performance to convey emotion and meaning.

Always loved the blues, love playing it, love singing. Have felt the blues so many times it ain't funny. First time I heard Charley Patton was Spoonful Blues, was transfixed like a bug drawn to headlights and crashing into a windscreen. This music has soul. The older and more traditional the better, nothing compares to blues music. Hits a chord and resonates with everyone.

@Head Didn't think so. It makes no difference to me. I've loved his work for more years than I can remember. He was/ is a mysterious treasure. Dear to me.

Head

@jenny_jenny_nc He’s not, that rumor was a result of his biographers claiming so because he had straight hair for a black man. So do I & I am black. We are all mixed with something, including Charley, but he happens to have white blood instead of Cherokee. I’ve done the research, extensively.

At 67 having played music and loving the blues I am now retired. Now I can study it, and, this is one hell-of-a great documentary. Thanks to those who produced it.
