In 2012, Charli XCX rose to prominence with the Icona Pop collaboration "I Love It", which became an international success, reaching top 10 in North America and Europe. Her debut studio album, True Romance (2013), was released that year to critical acclaim, despite not meeting commercial expectations. In 2014, she contributed the chorus and hook to "Fancy" by rapper Iggy Azalea, which finished the year as one of the best-selling singles worldwide and was nominated for two Grammy Awards. The same year, Charli XCX released "Boom Clap", which became her first solo top-ten single on the Billboard Hot 100. Her second studio album, the pop/rock-influenced Sucker, was released at the end of the year, and spawned the successful singles "Break the Rules" and "Doing It".
In 2015, Charli XCX began working with producers and artists in A. G. Cook's British collective PC Music, as well as producer Sophie. While working on her third album, she released the Vroom Vroom EP in 2016 and the mixtapes Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 in 2017, as well as a series of singles including the BPI-certified "After the Afterparty", "Boys", and "1999". In 2019, Charli XCX released her third studio album, Charli, which was followed by her fourth studio album, How I'm Feeling Now, which she recorded and released during the UK's first national lockdown in 2020. Charli's latest addition to her discography is CRASH, released on 18 March 2022, including the singles Good Ones and New Shapes.
In addition to her solo work, Charli XCX has co-written songs for other artists including Camila Cabello, Rita Ora, Selena Gomez, and many more.
Break My Heart
Charli XCX Lyrics

I keep trying to solve 'em
With some liquor, lies and chemicals
I'm just tryna be honest, yeah
I break every promise
To anyone who gets too close
I'mma house on fire 'Til the day I die
Let me burn, woo-oah
I'm just gonna break-break-break
Break your heart heart heart
Smash it up-up like it's glass
I'm just gonna take take take
All your love-love-love
Use it up, won't give it back
Baby I was born vicious
No I can't help myself
I'm just gonna break-break-break
Break your heart heart heart
Smash it up-up like it's glass
I'm just gonna uh, uh, uh
I'm just gonna uh, uh, uh i'm just gonna
I guess the reason I'm like this
Is cause I suffered in silence
I've been torn apart and damaged good
My emotions are fragile
I act so tough but meanwhile
I can't trust you but I wish I could

In these lyrics, Charli XCX expresses her inner struggles and the destructive behavior she engages in as a coping mechanism. She acknowledges having personal demons and problems that continuously haunt her, and she attempts to find solace by indulging in vices such as alcohol, lies, and chemicals. Despite her desire to be honest, she admits that she often breaks promises to those who become too close to her. This suggests a pattern of self-sabotage and an inability to fully open up to others due to her own issues.
The line "I'mma house on fire 'Til the day I die" illustrates the intensity of Charli XCX's emotional state. She perceives herself as a metaphorical house engulfed in flames, constantly burning and destructive. This serves as a warning to others to let her burn and self-destruct rather than attempting to save her. This could indicate a desire for independence and a belief that she is a lost cause, unable to be helped or saved.
The chorus further emphasizes Charli XCX's destructive tendencies. She proclaims her intention to break the heart of the person she is addressing—almost as if it is a defense mechanism. She compares shattering their heart to smashing glass, highlighting the fragility and vulnerability of love. She also declares her intention to take all their love without returning it, suggesting a fear of commitment and a reluctance to reciprocate affection.
Charli XCX attributes her conflicted nature to past experiences of suffering in silence. She has been deeply hurt and carries the scars of past damage, making her emotionally fragile. Despite presenting a tough exterior, she struggles to trust others, although she wishes she could. This reveals a dichotomy within her character—a desire for connection but an inability to fully let her guard down due to fear of being hurt again.
Overall, the lyrics illustrate Charli XCX's internal battle with her own demons, her tendency to self-destruct, and her difficulties in forming and maintaining emotional connections. By delving into her vulnerability and exposing her inner turmoil, she offers listeners a glimpse into the complexities of her psyche.
