The song was announced a month before its release, which kicked off its heavy promo campaign including numerous TikTok videos and a Boiler Room set called "PARTY GIRL".
On 29 January 2024, Charli tweeted a list of marketing ideas that "were sent" to her, a similar thing she did in 2020 before announcing her fourth studio album how i'm feeling now. The list contains an acronym 'VD', which stands for the title, confirmed by actress Rachel Sennott in the first of many TikTok videos.
On 3 February 2024, Charli released the first snippet of the single through TikTok and continued using the snippet throughout the month in a series of videos from different occasions such as photoshoots, album listening parties she held for fans, backstage at award shows and parties she had attended. One video guest starred Charli's friend, protégé, and collaborator Addison Rae, who appears on the remix for "Von dutch", that appears on the 7" vinyl. The song premiered live on 22 February 2024, during Charli's Boiler Room set held in Brooklyn, New York. The event received an astonishing 25,000 RSVPs within the first few hours of the announcement, which is the largest count in Boiler Room history.
The music video was announced three days before its release on the same day as the single. It was shot at Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport and features Charli running through the airport from a cameraman and also jumping off the wing of an Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger plane.
At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, Von Dutch won Best Pop Dance Recording award.

Yeah, I heard you talk about me, that's the word on the street
You're obsessing, just confess it, put your hands up
It's obvious, I'm your number one
It's alright to just admit that I'm the fantasy
You're obsessing, just confess it 'cause it's obvious
I'm your number oneI'm your number one
I'm your number one, yeah
I'm just living that life
Von Dutch, cult classic but I still pop
I get money, you get mad because the bank's shut
Yeah, I know your little secret, put your hands up
It's so obvious, I'm your number one
Life
Von Dutch, cult classic in your eardrums
Why you lying? You won't fuck unless he's famous
Do that little dance, without it, you'd be nameless
It's so obvious, I'm your number one
I'm your number one
I'm your number one
I'm your number one
Yeah, it's so obvious
I'm your number one
I'm your number one
I'm your number one
Yeah, it's so obvious
It's okay to just admit that you're jealous of me
You're obsessing, just confess it 'cause it's obvious
I'm your number one
I'm your number one
I'm your number one
I'm your number one
Your number one, your number one
Your number one
I'm just living that life
Von Dutch, cult classic but I still pop
I get money, you get mad because the bank's shut (bank's shut)

In the song "Von Dutch" by Charli XCX, the lyrics delve into the themes of jealousy, obsession, and recognition of one's own worth and influence. The singer confronts someone who is envious of them and has been spreading gossip about them in an attempt to bring them down. The singer challenges this individual to acknowledge their jealousy and admit that the singer holds a significant place in their thoughts as the number one in their eyes. By addressing the rumors and jealousy head-on, the singer asserts their dominance and power over the situation.
The recurring motif of "I'm your number one" signifies the singer's confidence and self-assurance. They are unapologetic about their success and the attention they receive, embracing their status as the fantasy and obsession of others. The singer highlights the difference between themselves and those who envy them, emphasizing that they are living their best life and reaping the benefits of their hard work while others resort to deceit and lies to elevate themselves.
The mention of Von Dutch, a renowned fashion brand associated with a particular era and aesthetic, adds a layer of nostalgia and cultural reference to the song. By juxtaposing their luxurious lifestyle with the struggles and insecurities of those who are envious, the singer emphasizes the superficiality and shallowness of the jealousy directed towards them. The lyrics also touch on the idea of fame and how it influences people's actions and desires, suggesting that some individuals prioritize status and recognition over authentic connections and relationships.
Overall, "Von Dutch" portrays a narrative where the singer confidently embraces their success and confronts those who seek to undermine them out of jealousy. Through bold and assertive lyrics, Charli XCX delivers a message of self-empowerment and self-assurance, reminding listeners to value themselves and not let the negativity of others dim their shine.
