3) The English Band
The jazz-inflected, London-based group Charlie was as well-known for the sexy babes on their album covers as they were for their close, smooth harmonies and slick, catchy singles like ยดTurningยด and ยดWatching TV.ยด The bandยดs core lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Terry Thomas (who had also been in a band with Free and Bad Companyยดs Simon Kirke), bassist/vocalist John Anderson (formerly of Axe) and drummer Steve Gadd (not to be confused with the american session-drummer), and a wide array of supporting players, including keyboardist Julian Colbeck, guitarist Martin Smith, auxiliary drummer Shep Lonsdale and former Argent members Bob Henrit and John Verity. Their radio-friendly sound debuted in 1976 with ยดFantasy Girlsยด and the group managed a steady stream of moderate FM hits in the US and the UK, including 1978ยดs ยดKiller Cutยด and ยดShe Loves To Be In Love.ยด However, Charlieยดs biggest success came with the 1983 hit ยดIt's Inevitable,ยด which recieved considerable airplay from MTV and was featured on their self-titled 7th album. Despite the added prominence this single and tours with the Doobie Brothers, Styx, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and the Kinks brought them, the group remained primarily a cult favorite for their nearly decade-long career. Charlieยดs swan song came in 1984 with ยดIn Pursuit Of Romanceยด, which featured Thomas as the only original member. Four of their albums -- ยดFight Dirtyยด, ยดGood Morning Americaยด, ยดHere Comes Troubleยด and ยดNo Second Chanceยด -- were re-released as CD two-fer packages from Renaissance Records in the late 90ยดs; the label also released ยดBest Of Charlieยด in early 2000.
In 2009 the band released a new album named Kitchens of Distinction

Homesick
Charlie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I saw the pain deep in her eyes and that's when I understood
That everything was gonna change and that it wouldn't be good
That things were taking a turn but not in the way that they should
It was a sunny afternoon the day that everything changed
Me and my friends were hanging out like any regular day
That's when my mama came to me and then she pulled me aside
And I could tell something was wrong just by the look in her eyes
Right at that moment I could slowly feel my heart start to sink
I had a feeling that it wouldn't be too long 'fore we leave
It was so much for me to process that I couldn't believe
And still the tension was rising although I wanted to stay
That's when my parents came and told me we had no other way
I had a week to say goodbye before we hopped on a plane
Knowing even if I go back it'd never feel the same
Knowing even if I go back it'd never feel same, yeah (Mmm)
It'd never feel the same (It'd never feel the same)
Tryna feel just fine but I'm homesick
Tryna feel alright but I'm homesick
I'm just tryna get by but I'm homesick
But I'm homesick, but I'm homesick
Tryna feel just fine but I'm homesick
Tryna feel alright but I'm homesick
I'm just tryna get by but I'm homesick
But I'm homesick, but I'm homesick
Tryna feel just fine but I'm homesick
Tryna feel alright but I'm homesick
I'm just tryna get by but I'm homesick
But I'm homesick, but I'm homesick
Russia where my childhood took place
A place that I really know
A place I can call my own
A place I can call my home, yeah
A place I can call my home
I was born and raised in Russia
Spent all my days in Russia
Felt love and hate in Russia
Felt joy and pain in Russia
Had my whole life in Russia
Spent all my time in Russia
All day and night in Russia
We laughed and cried in Russia
I wake up everyday and still feel like I'm stuck in a dream
We left so suddenly I never got the closure I need
My life in Russia was the only future that I could see
And now I haven't got a clue, I don't know where I should be
I got so many questions
Thoughts that I cannot deafen
I think I'm falling under the weight of this depression
Now I got no direction
Got pain I cannot lessen
I see somebody broken and lost in my reflection
Tryna feel just fine but I'm homesick
I been losing my focus, struggling to find a motive
I been losing hope while my doubts just keep growing
Tryna take a step but don't know where I'm going
I'm tryna
I'm tryna, yeah
Tryna feel just fine but I'm homesick (Mmm)
Tryna feel alright but I'm homesick (Mmm)
I'm just tryna get by but I'm homesick
But I'm homesick, but I'm homesick (Yeah)
Tryna feel just fine but I'm homesick
Tryna feel alright but I'm homesick
I'm just tryna get by but I'm homesick
But I'm homesick, but I'm homesick
Tryna feel just fine but I'm homesick
Tryna feel alright but I'm homesick
I'm just tryna get by but I'm homesick
But I'm homesick, but I'm homesick
The lyrics of Charlie's song "Homesick" focus on the emotional journey of a person who is being uprooted from their home and forced to leave everything familiar behind. The song begins with a poignant scene of the singer seeing their mother trying to hold back tears, signaling that something significant and potentially distressing is about to happen. The singer realizes that everything is about to change in a way that will not be good, indicating a sense of impending loss and sadness.
As the story unfolds, we learn that the singer is given a week to say goodbye before leaving on a plane, with the realization sinking in that even if they were to return, things would never be the same. This sudden upheaval disrupts the singer's sense of stability and security, leaving them feeling lost and homesick for the place they once called home. The lyrics convey a deep sense of longing and nostalgia for Russia, the singer's childhood home, a place filled with memories of love, joy, and pain.
The singer's feelings of homesickness are palpable throughout the song, as they struggle to come to terms with the abrupt change and grapple with a sense of disorientation and confusion about their future. The lyrics paint a picture of someone grappling with unanswered questions, a lack of closure, and a sense of being adrift in a sea of uncertainty. The internal turmoil and emotional weight of the situation are vividly expressed through the singer's struggles to find a sense of peace and belonging in their new reality.
Overall, "Homesick" captures the complex emotions of loss, longing, and displacement that come with leaving behind a familiar place and facing an uncertain future. The singer's yearning for their homeland and the sense of not belonging in their new surroundings create a poignant and relatable exploration of the universal human experience of homesickness. The song beautifully conveys the bittersweet mix of memories and emotions that accompany leaving behind a place that was once home.
