One of the best known American power pop bands, the group's biggest hits over the years include "I Want You to Want Me", "Surrender", "Dream Police", "Don't Be Cruel" (a cover of Elvis Presley's hit), and "The Flame". Their most recent release, The Latest, has gained critical acclaim. They also wrote and performed the theme song for "The Colbert Report" as well as "That 70s Show", both tunes being fan favorites.
Nielsen and Petersson originally formed the group as Fuse in 1967, with Carlos joining the group several years later; however, when Zander joined as vocalist in 1972, the group was renamed Cheap Trick. Zander is considered one of the best hard rock vocalists of his era. For their part, Tom Petersson has been known for playing custom made 8, 12, and even a 18 string custom bass made by Modulus for Tom in 1981 and Rick Nielsen also has a penchant for unusual instruments. He owns and plays a five-necked solidbody electric guitar (it can be seen in the video for the song "She's Tight" among others).

This Time Around
Cheap Trick Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of your past, oh no
Change every moment knowing your decisions
They just won't last, oh no
Well it's different this time around
I won't look back 'cause i found
That gone are the days
It feels right turning this time around
Always the danger of falling into
A mindless shell, oh yeah
Come out of your shell don't fall into a trap
You can't get out (can't get out, can't get out)
Well it's different this time around
I won't look back 'cause i found
That gone are the days
Long cold nights
It feels like turning this time around
When it hurts that bad
You know my temperature rises
It never goes down
It's goin' up
Straight up
When it hurts that bad
You know my temperature rises
It never goes down
It's goin' up
Straight up, straight up
Gone are the days
Long are the nights
It feels right turning this time around, oh yeah
It's different this time around
I won't look back 'cause i found
That gone are the days
Long are nights
It feels right turning this time around
The lyrics to Cheap Trick's "This Time Around" serve as a call to action for the listener to learn from past mistakes and take control of their life in the present. The opening lines "Never look back but now never lose sight, Of your past, oh no" acknowledges the importance of reflecting on one's past but not dwelling on it. The following line "Change every moment knowing your decisions, They just won't last, oh no" seeks to remind us that every decision we make has consequences and we need to be mindful of them.
The chorus of the song, "Well it's different this time around, I won't look back 'cause I found, That gone are the days, Long are the nights, It feels right turning this time around," is a statement of commitment to change. The singer acknowledges that things may have been difficult in the past but now the present moment is different and they are embracing it. The lines "Always the danger of falling into, A mindless shell, oh yeah, Come out of your shell don't fall into a trap, You can't get out (can't get out, can't get out)" serve as a warning against complacency and encourages the listener to step out of their comfort zone and take control of their life.
The lyrics also touch on the physical aspect of emotional pain with the lines "When it hurts that bad, You know my temperature rises, It never goes down, It's going up, Straight up." The repetition of the lines serves to emphasize the intensity of emotional pain and how it can affect a person's physical state.
Overall, "This Time Around" is a song that is both empowering and encouraging. It urges the listener to take control of their life and not be defined by their past mistakes. The song's dynamic melody and punchy guitar riffs serve to reinforce the lyrics' message of strength and resilience.
