Heaven Help My Heart
Chess Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If it were love I would give that love every second I had
and I do. Did I know where he'd lead me to?
Did I plan doing all of this for the love of a man?
well I let it happen anyhow, and what I'm feeling now
has no easy explanation, reason plays no part.
Heaven help my heart!
I love him too much.
What if he saw my whole existence
turning around a word, a smile, a touch?

One of these days and it won't be long he'll know more about me
than he should--all my dreams will be understood.
No surprise, nothing more to learn from the look in my eyes.
Don't you know that time is not my friend?
I'll fight it to the end
hoping to keep that best of moments when the passions start.
Heaven help my heart
the day that I find, suddenly I've run out of secrets,
suddenly I'm not always on his mind.

Maybe it's best to love a stranger;
well, that's what I've done--
heaven help my heart.

Heaven help my heart.

Overall Meaning

In Chess's song "Heaven Help My Heart", the singer confesses her deep, all-consuming love for a man, but also her fear of losing him. She admits to giving all of her love to this man, even though she did not know where it would lead her. She questions whether she should have planned to give so much of herself, but ultimately decides she would have let it happen regardless. The singer's emotions are overwhelming and transcend reason, leaving her at a loss for words to explain them. She is so in love with this man that she fears he may one day see all of her dreams, fears, and desires. She fears that she is not always on his mind and that someday he may no longer be interested in her.

This song touches on the vulnerability that comes with being in love. The singer is fully aware of the risks of loving someone so deeply and exposing herself to them, but she continues to do so regardless. The fear of losing this love becomes all-consuming, and the singer asks for divine intervention to help her heart.

Overall, "Heaven Help My Heart" is a highly emotional and vulnerable song about the risks and rewards of love.

One of the greatest musicals ever. The genius of Benny and Bjorn combined with Tim Rice. Great cast as well.

Like many others here, I saw the original production in London as a young man. It blew my mind to see the enormous, illuminated, animated checkerboard floor. But then the whole damn floor started to rise up at an angle on a gigantic hydraulic arm. Bam! And then, as if that wasn't enough, the whole assembly started rotating with the actors moving across this mesmerizing display like chess pieces. Totally fell in love with theatre at this point.

You never get that feeling from computer graphics 3D movies.

I saw it in the West End too. It was panned in the US, probably too complicated for the US. Or, was it because every other hit show on Broadway was British?

Jonathan Furzeland

Sounds magical. Wish I'd seen that. This is my favourite musical

You described my own experience to a T. I believe Royal Albert Hall was the theater, but it was decades ago, and I could be mistaken. A high school friend had loaned me the soundtrack on CD, and I fell in love with the music. On a graduation trip to London with my parents, they wanted to see a particular musical, but we couldn’t get tickets. I then lobbied for Chess and won them over. It wasn’t hard as they were both fans of ABBA. They were glad we saw it. They’re both gone now, but I still remember the experience. And I still love the soundtrack.

@Joe Kelsall I don’t know how the musical was received on Broadway at the time, but I remember One Night in Bangkok was a hit on the radio in the US. I, for one, loved Chess and still do.

I love Elaine Paige and especially the songs from CHess written by the guys from Abba. Genius.

This song is really a masterpiece (like every other song in Chess) but I think that if they had added a key change right after she sings the words 'Heaven Help My Heart' for the second time, it would have made it even better than it is!

Nenzatti Bellece

Apart from the lyrics, this song is a kind of medicine that makes my cry.
