[MOLOKOV]
We wish, no must, make our disgust
at this abuse perfectly clear.
We're here for chess -- are the U.S.?
If so, why foul the
atmosphere?

[FLORENCE]
I must protest -- our delegation has a host of valid points to
raise,
Our player's sporting attitude's beyond all praise,
as any neutral would attest
But we concede the fact his masters bend the rules is not
a player's fault --
We'll overlook their crude political assault
and under protest will proceed

[MOLOKOV]
We wish, no must, make our disgust
at this abuse perfectly clear
we're here for chess -- are the U.S.?
How can you make such a
claim?

[MOLOKOV]

If your man's so sweet
Then why his fighting talk?
If he's not a cheat
Then why on earth
Did he go take a walk?

[ARBITER]

Point 17
No one-way screen
Will be allowed
In the hall

[MOLOKOV]
Why let him loose?
He'll soon reduce
This great event
To a brawl

It's very sad
To see the ancient and
Distinguished game
That used to be

[FLORENCE]

I am not surprised
He wanted fresher air
Once he realized
There was no hope
Of your lot playing fair
How sad
To see
What used
To be

[BOTH]
A model of decorum and tranquillity
Become like any other sport
A battleground for rival ideologies
To slug it out with glee

[THE RUSSIAN]
Through the elegant yelling
disgust
Of this compelling dispute

Comes the ghastly suspicion

My opposition's a fruit

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Chess's song "Quartet" depict a heated and confrontational exchange between the representatives of the United States (Florence) and the Soviet Union (Molokov) during a chess match. Molokov expresses his disgust and accuses the United States of fouling the atmosphere by engaging in political maneuvering. Florence protests that their player should not be blamed for the political actions of his superiors and defends his sportsmanship. However, Molokov questions the integrity of the American player, asserting that his aggressive language and actions prove that he is not a fair competitor.

Amidst the argument, the Arbiter intervenes with various rules and regulations, emphasizing fairness and transparency. The Russian representative criticizes the American delegation's behavior, suspecting that they are tainted by their country's political agenda. Florence retaliates by highlighting the pressure and strain her player faces, suggesting that this is the reason for his aggressive behavior. The exchange continues with each side expressing their disappointment in how the noble game of chess has become a battleground for rival ideologies and dirty tactics.

Overall, the lyrics of "Quartet" showcase the intense rivalry and political tensions that surround the game of chess, demonstrating how external factors can impact the sportsmanship and atmosphere of the competition.

The perfect staging of this song would have the performers seated on a VERY, VERY slowly revolving stage, w/a spotlight on each solo and then full light on the chorus parts (i.e., when they all sing. Like the song's end).

@tankmaster1018

Ever since I heard this song at this speed (literally twice the speed of the American version of Chess) I can't go back to listening to the American version. Once you've heard the potential of this song at this tempo, its really hard to go back to a way slower version. This is FAR better! Speed with some songs isn't always a bad thing as your music teachers would want to believe as long as you don't fuck up the notes...

@Avoozl

That goes for every song in the Chess in Concert. I've grown up with the original Chess, so when I heard the 'in Concert' versions my first (and only) reaction was "what the hell is this?!?"

@toriboy25

This is The only version as far as I'm concerned

@mythordk

I love this song. Elaine P. is so great.

@VibeClubPodcast

Great song, I'd never heard this before and I was introduced to this only this week by a guest on the podcast where we chatted about this exact song

@natelaaly21

It because this was written for Elaine. I just cant listen to any other version of this classic musical other than the original. The best :) xx

@verkaforever

Elaine Paige is a great singer, but for me the best part of this song is Dennis Quilley's vocals.

@helenascheele5922

This is absolutely the best version and speed. The first version of this musical is actually Done in Swedish. I have a VHS-tape with it.
But don’t you like Tommy Körbergs (th Russian)voice? The other Swede in this quartet is Björn Skifs.
I really love this musical, with the cold war, the complicated relations as a scenario and Tim Rice, Björn och Benny (from ABBA) as composers.
Sometime you can be produkter to be Swedish 😅

@Mayami17

remembers me of our perfomance with different school choirs from south denmark... love this musical^^
