Pity the child
Chess Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Frederick:
I'm not the kind
To be vindictive--
Holding some childish grudge.
How could I be?
I'm in the spotlight--
Half of the world my judge.
All I demand
Is those I work for,
Those I give all my skills
All my time, and pain,
Those that I entertain.
Give me the same

Compassion in return
But the fools never learn.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Pity the Child" in Chess's musical paint a vivid picture of a child, Frederick, who craves attention and affection. Frederick is in the spotlight, and he feels like the world is judging him. He's not someone to hold grudges, but he demands compassion and empathy from those he serves--those who benefit from his skills and time. Frederick's pain is palpable, and he wants his hard work to be recognized and appreciated. It is something he deserves, yet constantly lacks in his life as an entertainer.

The song highlights the challenges of being in the limelight, while also acknowledging the deep-seated human desire for compassion and understanding. Frederick's frustration is relatable, as many people have experienced the pain of feeling like their hard work isn't valued or appreciated, and this can be especially true for entertainers. The song leaves the listener feeling sympathetic for those individuals who work hard to entertain others and often remain overlooked.

Because like most things in this relm people only see what they want to see. Lies and fake... The few see the truth and real... Love from the relm above the tell below.

I agree. He has a rock and roll voice, not an operatic voice, but every time he has been cast in a role, it was because he, and only he, was perfect for the part.

@BarbAF100

I want to see him perform the role of Judas since he was so great on the original Jesus Christ Superstar album. Some one needs to tell him to get going on that project! : )

@kimberlygabaldon3260

Me2 he is definitely my favorite Judas.
