Chet Baker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dear old Southland I hear you calling me.
And I long how I long to roam
back to my old Kentucky home.
Dear old Southland for you my heart is yearning
And I long just to see once more

Overall Meaning

"Dear Old Stockholm" is actually a Swedish folk song that has been popularized in jazz music. Chet Baker, in particular, performed a popular rendition of the song. In the song, Baker's lyrics describe a yearning to return to the American South. The first line, "Dear old Southland I hear you calling me," sets the tone for the rest of the piece. Baker longs to return to his roots in Kentucky, highlighting the importance of one's origin and personal history.

The use of the Swedish folk tune for an American jazz song is a unique example of musical fusion. It showcases the ability of music to transcend cultures and geographies. Baker's interpretation of the song further adds an emotional depth not present in the original. The melancholic trumpet tones and Baker's vulnerable voice create a mood of nostalgia and longing that is universal in nature.

Beautiful rendition of a Swedish folk song, Ack Värmeland Du Sköna, made in to jazz. Monica Zetterlund, Swedish jazz singer, made that in to jazz. I believe she was from that part of Sweden, Värmland. Check out Monica Z. and Bill Evans.

@MathiasSkyman

That's correct. Monica was born in Hagfors, Värmland.
