This Is Always
Chet Baker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This isn't sometimes, this is always
This isn't maybe, this is always
This is love, the real beginning of forever

This isn't just mid summer madness
A passing glow, a moment's gladness
Yes it's love, I knew it on the night we met
You tied a string around my heart

So how can I forget you?
With every kiss I know that this is always

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Chet Baker's song This Is Always are a declaration of the depth and everlasting nature of love. The repetition of the phrase "this isn't" emphasizes the certainty and conviction behind the singer's words. They're not just saying that they love someone sometimes, or that they might love them in the future - they're saying that their love is constant and unchanging. The use of the present tense - "this is love" - adds to this sense of immediacy and permanence. The line "the real beginning of forever" suggests that the singer sees their love as the start of a lifelong commitment.

The second verse builds on this theme, contrasting the singer's love with "mid summer madness" - something fleeting and temporary. The singer acknowledges that their love may have started as a "moment's gladness," but it has grown into something much deeper and more enduring. The line "I knew it on the night we met" is a classic romantic trope, recalling the idea of love at first sight. It's also worth noting the use of the word "glow" in this verse - it's a subtle reference to the way love can feel warm and radiant.

The final lines of the song are particularly poignant. The metaphor of "tying a string around my heart" is a poetic way of describing how someone can have a profound impact on our emotional lives. The singer is saying that they can't forget this person because they've become an integral part of their being. And the final line - "with every kiss I know that this is always" - brings the song full circle. The singer is reiterating that their love is not dependent on circumstance or time. It's a constant, unwavering presence in their life.

Overall, This Is Always is a simple but powerful love song. It doesn't rely on elaborate metaphors or complex wordplay - instead, it communicates its message through clear, direct language and a strong emotional performance from Chet Baker.

There is a plethora of recordings documenting Chet's itinerant years, official releases and bootlegs, and discerning between the good, the bad and the ugly is not always easy, even if equipped with a good discography. If you're about to build a Chet collection and want to cover his later years, the Danish SteepleChase label is a solid foundation. With one notable exception, his last one, they capture Chet in good spirits and chops. The accompanying musicians are NHØP, Doug Raney, Duke Jordan, Paul Bley, the audio quality doesn't leave much to desire, some of the cover photos are very beautiful, even if Chet is physically deteriorating before our very eyes over a period of roughly eight years. But that's what documents are for, aren't they. I like European Chet the best, when he is in company of the guitarist with the short and the bassist with the long name, the selections of tunes suit him like mittens knitted with love, especially for him, the young Chad with the furrowed face, still exuding Californian breezes on chilly autumn nights in Denmark. This is always.

Well said. I met Chet several times, during the 70’s at Nick’s Jazz Joint in Laren. Playing and singing, sitting with head slightly bowed (en met geitenwollen sokken aan) in sandals, was an (musical) experience i’ll never forget. Met Chet a few times privately at Wally’s place (Wallace Bishop ex swing-drummer in the Earl Hines band) who’d settled in 1959/60 in Holland, and living 5 minutes from my place. Chet, looking sad, quite and somewhat aloof (as was Sonny Stitt who was there also and Wim Overgouw (?) as i recall) did tell me that in Europe he felt appreciated. He recorded some very good albums with Italian Jazz men. Spend some time in jail (in Italy) because of drugs etc,. His face had more crevasses then the grand Canyon. But he was a very nice, but troubled man. All these jazz experiences and meetings are ingrained in my brain. And yes Henri listening to recordings i haven’t heard before revive me. As always good talking to you. Be well & a G’day Cheers!
