He grew up performing in community and regional theater, and when he was 14, assistant-directed a theatrical benefit for Valley Children’s Hospital. He was very active throughout high school: he was involved in drama, was the president of the writer’s club, was editor of the school literary magazine and was a speech and debate champion.
At the end of his senior year, he wrote, directed and starred in a musical spoof of “Sweeney Todd,” titled “Shirley Todd,” in which all of the roles were gender-reversed. He starred as “Mr. Lovett”. While pursuing a career in film and television, he worked mornings before school in the cafeteria as a cookie scooper and summers as a clerk at a dry cleaners.
He currently plays Kurt Hummel in FOX’s new 2009 show, GLEE. This is his first TV role. He is openly gay.
As If We Never Said Goodbye

I know my way around here
The cardboard trees, the painted seas, the sound here
Yes, a world to rediscover
But I'm not in any hurry
And I need a moment
The whispered conversations
The atmosphere is thrilling here as always
Feel the early morning madness
Feel the magic in the making
Why, everything's as if we never said goodbye
I've spent so many mornings just trying to resist you
I'm trembling now, you can't know how I've missed you
Missed the fairytale adventure
In this ever-spinning playground
We were young together
I'm coming out of makeup
The light's already burning
Not long until the cameras will start turning
And the early morning madness
And the magic in the making
Yes, everything's as if we never said goodbye
I don't want to be alone
That's all in the past
This world's waited long enough
I've come home at last!
And this time will be bigger
And brighter than we knew it
So watch me fly, we all know I can do it
Could I stop my hands from shaking?
Has there ever been a moment
With so much to live for?
The whispered conversations
In overcrowded hallways
So much to say, not just today but always
We'll have early morning madness
We'll have magic in the making
Yes, everything's as if we never said goodbye
Yes, everything's as if we never said goodbye
We taught the world new ways to dream
Chris Colfer’s song “As If We Never Said Goodbye” is a tribute to the iconic Norma Desmond, a character from the classic 1950 film “Sunset Boulevard”. The song is about the feeling of returning to a place that is familiar but also different, and the excitement and nerves that come with it. The beginning of the song sees the singer reflecting on their past and coming back to a place that they know well. The lyrics use vivid metaphors like “cardboard trees, painted seas” and “whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways” to paint a picture of the environment.
The second verse then shifts to the present moment as the singer is about to perform and the atmosphere is “thrilling” but nerve-wracking. They are feeling emotional and vulnerable, having missed the place and the people that they had shared memories with. The chorus repeats the idea that everything feels as if they never said goodbye, as if time has stood still and they are back to where they started.
The final part of the song is a declaration of renewal and determination. The singer is no longer afraid and is ready to conquer the world, saying that “this time will be bigger and brighter than we knew it”. The song ends with the belief that they have taught the world “new ways to dream”.
