Summer Love
Chris Rea Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Long ago and far away
The autumn whispers to the falling leaves
Summer love can't stay
This was their place, this was where
Just for one moment, without cares
Two lovers dreaming of how the world should be
Did you have to go, did I have to stay
Did you have to go, away
Now it's all gone, but who can forget
Summer love, sweet summer love
I see your shadow everywhere
I feel your smile though you're not there
A kiss for every star in the sky way above
You'll always be my one and only summer love
The lyrics to "Summer Love" by Chris Rea are about a nostalgic long-lost love from summertime. The first verse sets the scene of a distant past where two lovers were in love during the summer season. However, as autumn approaches, the love fades away, and it cannot remain as people move on from the summer season. The second verse then paints a picture of the memory that remains, and although it is all gone, the singer cannot forget their sweet summer love.
The nostalgic feeling of the singer is captured in the chorus, as he reminiscences on the place where the couple shared their love, and pleads for the return of his summer love. He muses on the separation that occurred, questioning whether they had to go or stay, and alluding to the pain that comes with remembering the past. The closing verse affirms the enduring memory, as the lover sees the shadow and smile of their partner everywhere, acknowledging that the love will always be remembered.
Overall, the lyrics of "Summer Love" are a poignant reflection on nostalgia, the passing of time, and the beauty of love that is now lost in the past.

Pure gold, beautiful and heartbreaking. I remember when my dad bought the album while I was a young boy, and this song was so sad at the time. Now that you've been through the motion the lyrics makes more sense, but the yearning is still there and echoes the past.
