Jesus Messiah
Chris Tomlin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That we might become His righteousness
He humbled himself and carried the cross
Love so amazing, love so amazing
Jesus Messiah, name above all names
Blessed redeemer, Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners, the ransom from Heaven
His body the bread, his blood the wine
Broken and poured out all for love
The whole earth trembled, and the veil was torn
Love so amazing, love so amazing, yeah
Jesus Messiah, name above all names
Blessed redeemer, Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners, the ransom from Heaven
Jesus Messiah, Lord of all
All our hope is in You, all our hope is in You
All the glory to You, God, the light of the world
Jesus Messiah, name above all names
Blessed redeemer, Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners, the ransom from Heaven
Jesus Messiah, Lord of all
Jesus Messiah, Lord of all
You're the Lord of all
The Lord of all
The lyrics to Chris Tomlin's song "Jesus Messiah" are centered around the idea that Jesus Christ came to earth and became sin for all of humanity, even though he knew no sin himself. This sacrifice was made so that humanity could receive His righteousness. The song references the crucifixion, where Jesus humbled Himself and carried the cross. The sacrifice that Jesus made is then connected to the idea of love, described as amazing.
The chorus repeats the words "Jesus Messiah," as though to emphasize the importance of this title. Jesus Christ is then referred to as the "name above all names." The song continues by calling Jesus a "blessed redeemer" and "Emmanuel," or "God with us." All of these descriptions emphasize Jesus' role as a savior of humanity.
Later in the song, the lyrics speak of Jesus' body and blood as the bread and wine, calling back to the Last Supper. Love is once again emphasized as being responsible for Jesus' sacrifice, and the earth is said to have trembled as a result. The song concludes with the idea that all hope is in Jesus, and he is the lord of all.
Overall, the song offers a message of hope and redemption, emphasizing the idea that Jesus Christ offers salvation to all of humanity through His sacrifice.
