The God I Know
Chris Tomlin Lyrics

You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light
Whom shall I fear?
You crush the enemy
You are my sword and shield
Though troubles linger still
Whom shall I fear?
I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
My strength is in your name
For you alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory
Whom shall I fear?
Whom shall I fear?
I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in your hands
I'm holding on to your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful
Nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in your hands
I'm holding on to your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful
You are faithful
I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
I know who goes before me
I know who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
The one who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
Whom shall I fear?
Whom shall I fear?
Whom shall I fear?
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
Chris Tomlin's "Whom Shall I Fear" is a powerful and uplifting song about the strength and protection we find in God. The opening lines express the intimate relationship between the singer and God, where the singer sees God as someone who listens to his call and provides comfort through the night. The next lines reveal God's immense power to defeat the singer's enemies and be his protector. The refrain poses a rhetorical question, "Whom shall I fear?", as the answer is apparent throughout the song that God is by the singer's side and is his ultimate protector.
The second verse reaffirms the singer's confidence in God as he sings about knowing who goes before him and stands behind him. This is a reference to God's guiding presence when the singer moves forward in life and God's protection when he retreats. The singer mentions the God of angel armies standing by his side, a metaphor for God's army fighting for him in spiritual warfare. The chorus repeats, emphasizing God's never-ending friendship and protection.
The song concludes with a reminder that nothing formed against him shall stand, and God holds the world in His hands. The singer affirms that he is holding onto God's promises because He is faithful.
Overall, βWhom Shall I Fearβ is a declaration of faith, trust, and confidence in Godβs sovereignty, His willingness to protect us from our enemies, and His never-failing faithfulness.
