Your Heart
Chris Tomlin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I never did dream beyond the pastures I could tend
It never was about the praise, not about the street parade
I didn't really need a crowd when Goliath fell down
I never meant to woo a king with simple shepherd songs
Or hide away inside a cave, safe from danger's arms
I never meant to wear a crown or try to bring armies down
It never was about me and who I hoped to be
My heart looks like Your heart, my heart looks like Your heart
When the world looks at me, let them agree
That my heart looks like Your heart, my heart looks like Your heart
I never thought I would be much more than Jesse's kin
Who would ever dream a king would come from Bethlehem?
I know that I've crashed and burned, their lives have been overturned
But You redeem everything, yeah, even me
At the end of the day I want to hear people say
That my heart looks like Your heart, my heart looks like Your heart
When the world looks at me, I pray all they see
Is my heart looks like Your heart, my heart looks like Your heart
Five little stones or a royal robe
Shepherd or king doesn't mean a thing
'Cause at the end of the day
At the end of the day I wanna hear people say
That my heart looks like Your heart, my heart looks like Your heart
Unashamed I will dance, in Your name, lift my hands
'Til my heart looks like Your heart, my heart looks like Your heart
Like Your heart
Like Your heart
'Til this heart looks like Your heart
The lyrics of Chris Tomlin's song "Your Heart" speak to the struggle of finding true purpose and identity in life. The first verse reflects on the futility of seeking significance and validation through external achievements. The mention of oil dripping from the head alludes to the anointing of kings in biblical times, suggesting the pursuit of power and recognition. However, the singer acknowledges that these things are not what truly matter.
The second verse takes us back to the story of David, a shepherd boy who became a king. David didn't intend to become a king or seek glory for himself through his music or his victories. His heart was aligned with God's heart, and that is what set him apart. The mention of wearing a crown and trying to bring armies down emphasizes that it was never about personal ambition or conquest for David. His focus was on reflecting the heart of God and living in alignment with His will.
The chorus expresses the desire for one's heart to mirror the heart of God. It's a humble prayer asking for the world to see the love, compassion, and grace of God reflected in the singer's life. The lyrics acknowledge personal failures and mistakes, but also trust in God's redemption and ability to transform even the most broken areas.
Overall, "Your Heart" is a song that encourages listeners to shift their focus from themselves to God, seeking to live in a way that reflects His heart. It emphasizes the importance of humility, surrender, and alignment with God's will rather than seeking personal fame or accomplishment.

Praise God, praise Jesus and may we stand up as true sons and daughters of God and love God and Jesus more than anything else, doing anything for them, standing up for them in spite of what unbelievers might say or do against us to put us down. When God is against us, who is with us? And if God is with us, who can be against us? God is a loving, faithful caring God that is slow to anger and merciful. He is worthy of our praise. Praise the Lord. Praise Jesus.

ππππ Listening to this first time today out in a rain storm and in a season of my life where Iβm standing in obedience and full submission to Abba, positioned towards people I am destined to help who are throwing stones in judgment but they donβt know the depth of my aching heart and the wails of my soul. One of my deepest cries all my life... Let my heart look like His .. to be a living reflection of Jesus and help turn others faces toward King Jesus in FULL SURRENDER to Him as their Lord. Unashamed I will dance, in your name lift my hands βtil my heart looks like your heart!! ππππ»ππ»
