Dreamy Eyes
Christina Aguilera Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm reaching out to touch you
In the middle of the night
And I don't know if I've been sleeping
But I hold my pillow tight

Are you real or are you my
Imagination playing games?
I can set you free, you'll always be
My one eternal flame.

Your dreamy eyes,
They just won't say goodbye
Well, it must be my faith
Cause I just can't escape
And the passion never dies...
Oh, dreamy eyes
no matter how I cry
I just can't reach you
Dreamy eyes

You're a vision of tomorrow
And a ghost from yesterday
And I've been trying not to let you
Take my breath away.

You're a summer breeze that comes and goes
But somehow lingers on
tell me how can I forget you
If you've never really gone?

Your dreamy eyes
They just won't say goodbye
well, it must be my faith
'cause I just can't escape
And the passion never dies...
Oh, dreamy eyes
No matter how I cry
I just can't reach you
Dreamy eyes.

What do I have to do
To get that close to you and your...
Your dreamy eyes
They just won't say goodbye
Well, it must be my faith
'cause I just can't escape
And the passion never dies...
Oh, I tried so hard to release you
But no matter how I cry
I just keep seeing through
Dreamy eyes.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Christina Aguilera's song Dreamy Eyes appear to be about someone who is struggling to let go of a past romance. The singer is reaching out to touch someone in the middle of the night, but it is unclear if this person is real or if they are simply a figment of her imagination. She holds her pillow tight, seeking comfort from the unknown. It is clear that this person holds a special place in her heart since they are referred to as her one eternal flame.

The singer also refers to the object of her affection as a ghost from yesterday and a vision of tomorrow. It seems as though this person is both a memory and a hope for the future, and the singer is struggling to reconcile the two. The line "you're a summer breeze that comes and goes, but somehow lingers on" suggests that this person continues to have an impact on the singer's life even though they are no longer together.

The chorus, with its repeated reference to dreamy eyes, further emphasizes the idea that this person is not entirely real to the singer. No matter how hard she tries, she cannot seem to reach them or let go of their memory. Overall, the lyrics seem to explore the difficulty of moving on from a past love.

This is what SHE wanted her debut album to be like. However, her label wanted her to do teen pop.

@DHRGKBQXTJR this makes absolutely NO sense! But go off! I swear people know exactly what you mean on here but, want to debate about something so obvious or in this comment go off subject! lol

@Less Is More Upbeat or ballad has nothing to do with it. I Turn To You is a cover. It was originally sung by an R&B group All 4 One. If you listen to their version, you'll see that it is a very different genre compared to Christina's cover. They did an R&B ballad, Christina did a pop ballad.

Less Is More

@Floris Klaver this is a ballad tho. When ppl think teen pop, they’ll think of “genie in a bottle

Less Is More

@DHRGKBQXTJR it’s a ballad tho.. not upbeat like “come on over”

DHRGKBQXTJR
