Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams
Crosby Bing Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What price happiness? What price happiness?
Who can truthfully say?
But for every shall with tears we pay

Love is happiness, I've had happiness
But it ended one day
Now I look at life a different way
When skies are cloudy and gray
They're only gray for a day
So wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream your troubles away

Until that sunshine peeps through
There's only one thing to do
Wrap your troubles in dreams
And dream your troubles away

Castles may tumble
That's fate after all
Life's really funny that way
No use to grumble
Smile as they fall
Weren't you king for a day
Say!

Just remember that sunshine
Always follows the rain
And wrap your troubles in dreams
Dream your troubles away

When skies are cloudy and gray
They're only gray for a day

Whistle and dream your cares away

Until that sunshine peeps through
There's only one thing to do

Whistle and dream your cares away

Your castles may tumble
That's fate after all
Life's really funny that way
No use to grumble
Smile as they fall
Weren't you king for a day
Say!

Just remember that sunshine
Always follows the rain

Whistle and dream your cares away

Overall Meaning

The song "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams" by Crosby Bing is a hopeful and uplifting tune that encourages listeners to find solace in dreaming when times are tough. The lyrics ask a poignant question - what is the price of happiness and who can truly say? Despite the fact that we often pay for happiness with tears, the song reflects that ultimately love and happiness are worthwhile endeavors that make life worth living. This can be seen when the singer reveals that he has had happiness, but it ended one day, and now he looks at life in a different way.

However, the song also acknowledges that life can be unpredictable and tumultuous as castles sometimes crumble. But rather than grumbling, the song encourages us to smile and be grateful for the time we had on top. The chorus emphasizes that even in times when skies are gray, we should wrap our troubles in dreams and dream our troubles away until the sunshine peeks through. The song concludes with the message that we should always remember that sunshine follows the rain, and we should whistle and dream our cares away.

This song is a beautiful reminder that even in the darkest of times, hope and positivity can be found. It encourages us to believe that better days are ahead and that we have the power to find happiness in the present by focusing on our dreams and aspirations.

I consider this record to be one of the most important of the Great Depression! The song itself, now a jazz standard, is marvelous, and Bing gives it his all. This performance is among those that truly made a legend out of Harry Lillis Crosby.

@scotnick59

1931 was Bing's "breakthrough" year: he exited it as a true singing superstar: this is but one of his mega-hits from that fabled year of the Great Depression

Noticed that Harry Barris is one of the three composers of this song. He, Bing, and Al Rinker were Paul Whiteman's "Rhythm Boys" and the three can be heard on several Whiteman recordings such as 'Mississippi Mud', et.al.

I LOVE This Bing Record! It is very similar to his Brunswick Recordings from that Year! I have it on a Buff Bluebird 78 !

I much prefer the young Crosby’s voice to what it morphed into later.
