Next Year Baby
Cullum Jamie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Things are gonna change
Gonna drink less beer
And start all over again
Gonna read more books
Gonna keep up with the news
Gonna learn how to cook
Gonna pay my bills on time
File my mail away, everyday
Only drink the finest wine
And call my gran every Sunday
Well resolutions
Well baby they come and go
Will I do any of these things?
The answer's probably no
But if there's one thing, I must do
Despite my greatest fears
I'm gonna say to you
How I've felt all of these years
Next year
Next year
I'm gonna tell you how I feel
I'm gonna tell you how I feel
Well, resolutions
Baby they come and go
Will I do any of these things?
The answer's probably no
But if there's one thing, I must do
Despite my greatest fears
I'm gonna say to you
How I've felt all of these years

The lyrics to "Next Year Baby" by Jamie Cullum capture the essence of a New Year's resolution. The song is a declaration of commitment to self-improvement and change, with the first verse outlining specific goals like drinking less beer, reading more books, and cooking more. The second verse addresses more introspective goals, such as paying bills on time and keeping in touch with loved ones. The bridge acknowledges the probability that these resolutions may not be achieved, but there is one thing that the singer must do: tell someone how they feel, which is likely referring to a romantic interest.
The chorus of "Next Year Baby" repeats "next year" several times, emphasizing that these resolutions are for the future and that there is a sense of hope and optimism attached to them. However, the fact that the resolutions may not be achieved adds a layer of complexity to the song. It acknowledges that change is difficult and that even the best intentions may fall by the wayside. This emphasizes the importance of appreciating the present moment and not living solely for the future.
Overall, "Next Year Baby" is a thoughtful reflection on self-improvement and the struggle that often accompanies it. It is a reminder that while making goals and resolutions is important, it is equally important to live in the present and appreciate what one has accomplished so far.

the piano style he starts playing at 1:48 is called montuno. its a latin rhythm. when the bass player comes in, he plays a timbau rhythm. that whole latin section is wonderful cause it creates a ton of tension especially with the horn/string lines. when the first original motif comes back in at 3:25, there's a lot of peacefulness in the rest of the song. its quite nice to listen to, in my opinion, especially cause the montuno comes out of nowhere.
