Curtis Lee (28 October 1939 - 8 January 2015) born in Yuma, Arizona, USA an… Read Full Bio ↴Curtis Lee (28 October 1939 - 8 January 2015) born in Yuma, Arizona, USA an American Doo-wop and Pop singer of the early 1960s, and was the beneficiary of two great 1961 productions by Phil Spector.

These were "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" (U.S. Top 10) and "Under The Moon Of Love" (U.S. Top 50). In the UK, "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" was a minor hit record, going no higher than 47 in 1961.

Lee began his recording career in 1959, and the following year was signed by Dunes Records. Handsome and photogenic, Lee had a vocal approach close to the teen idols of the period. Spector's genius with the productions, besides his deft handling of the instrumental support, was to provide fills with strong doo-wop riffing from an R&B vocal group, The Halos, to produce two classic rock 'n' roll tunes.

Without Spector's guiding hand however, the hits simply dried up around 1968.

Can't believe I found this song! In 1961 I was 13 & it was the first day back to school. First day in 7th grade. I heard this song out in the school yard! Never heard it again because I wasn't allowed to listen to rock & roll by my adoptive mother! My name is BEVERLY JEAN!! Someone on Twitter the other day tweeted she found a song w/her name in it "Samantha"! I've never forgotten this song even though I never heard it again since that day! Based on the status of Pretty Little Angel Eyes, I remember this getting lots of airplay in NYC. It didn't chart like like that side , but I loved it just as much.

I think the reason this ace track wasn't a hit (in the UK) was because it was on the B-side of "Under the moon of Love" - which should have been a hit and wasn't! Even the Awesome "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" only made 41 in the UK Charts in '61.I heard that he later became a bricklayer- sometimes there ain't no justice !!
