Lee began his recording career in 1959, and the following year was signed by Dunes Records. Handsome and photogenic, Lee had a vocal approach close to the teen idols of the period. Spector's genius with the productions, besides his deft handling of the instrumental support, was to provide fills with strong doo-wop riffing from an R&B vocal group, The Halos, to produce two classic rock 'n' roll tunes.

Curtis Lee was a friend. 1959-60. I was playing bass in a band, The Ramrods, at The La Jolla Club in Tucson, where Ray Peterson had just closed a one week run as guest star. Andy Gaydos, the sax player, and I talked owner, Al Winecke, into bringing Curtis out from Hollywood. Andy and I drove all night after Saturday night's show and picked him up and drove back to Tucson. Fortunately, Peterson and his manager Stan Schulman had not yet left town. We went to their motel and told them about Curtis and invited them to our Monday night show. We barely had time to discuss what songs we would play much less rehearse. We played a set then brought him to the stage. Not only was Curtis a great singer but he had THE LOOK. Great hair, muscular build, captivating smile, and moves that were as unique as Presley's. Shulman and Peterson were blown away and invited him to New York to record and build his act. He did a couple rock and roll bus tours but decided it wasn't his thing. We called him from California during Christmas and he sounded very lonely in his New York hotel room and wished he was back on the west coast. I just read that he had passed. I was intending to go to Yuma this winter to hang out with him for a while. I guess we shouldn't put off the important things. Kenny Laursen
