The Shadow March

A forgotten place. Forgotten long time ago. There were no human beings. Plains were covered with ashes and dust. And with silence. Somewhere in the distance there was an old battlefield and even until now you can find old, rusted, broken weapons on the ground, broken shields, arrows, crashed field cannons, destroyed battle tank bodies. And bones, so many bones. But close your eyes. The ground remembers everything.

They are still marching the same road. Infantry. Guardians. Elites. The even ranks keep pace, singing battle march. March that was created by this army, that was brought through tens and hundreds of fights and skirmishes.

Battle banners flutter in the wind that has been ceased for long. The warriors are going to the next battle in this war that has been finished a long time ago. They will fight again and again and again. This is The Shadow March.

Noone buried or honored them. Noone expected them to come back from this hasher. They didn’t know. And they still don't. Their fate is to fight forever. Swords will be changed to halberds, then – to rifles and machine guns. Cavalry squadrons will be gone, giving way to armored tank divisions.

They died. By arrows, swords, bullets and shells. Every warrior of this army has died hundreds of times. The banners were broken by forged boots and burned in flames. The war devoured every last one.

And every time, when the whole army dies, all these warriors appear in their war camp again, as if there were no previous fierce and desperate fights. The scouts are rushing forward again. The regimental drums begin to rumble again. The engines growl, and tracks are rumbling. And again, one by one, the hard voices start to sing the march. The March of the damned army. The Shadow March...
