Lady Luck
Dance Hall Crashers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the waves come crashing down on heaven (she will be there)
When the skies sends thunder through the horizon and the rain keeps falling
Do you believe in truth or in fantasy? (said she would be there)
Don't forget he risked it all for one last chance at going somewhere

On his back he lies awake and he's down again (is it all over?)
Looking up the one he trusts is beautiful bu nowhere to be found
Have you seen his lady called Lady Luck? (said she would be here)
Snake eyes, smile that's devilish
Calling out he sees her then she fades

Now he wants to know where did she go?
Now he wants to know where has she gone?
Now he wants to know where did she go?

There was a time when all his dreams were in his hands (now he's spinning)
Lucky charms and one-eyed jacks won't bring it back
The writing's on the wall
And the day when he believed in everything (now it's crumbled)
All the cracks he's staring at belonged to him
But a long time ago

Now he wants to know where did she go?
Now he wants to know where has she gone?
Now he wants to know where did she go?

And he seems to remember when he was stronger
The grass was greener, the air was clearer
The sun shone brighter, he wasn't frightened
Everything counted, nothing mattered
Was she a vision that he created?
Held onto, but now she's gone

When the minutes drag like all eternity (who will be there?)
When the black and white pictures fade to a dirty brown
And curl at the edges
Does he believe in fate or reality? (is there a distinction?)
Now his world is crashing down on heaven an yes she is gone

Now he wants to know where did she go?
Now he wants to know where has she gone?
Now he wants to know where did she go?

Now he wants to know where has she gone?
Now he wants to know where did she go?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Lady Luck" by Dance Hall Crashers paint a vivid portrait of a man who is desperately seeking answers about what has happened to his luck and his lady, Lady Luck. The song is a lamentation of the highs and lows of life and the endless pursuit of answers to things that may be beyond our control. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, with the singer facing the wrath of the elements and seemingly losing the faith that Lady Luck will be there for him. The repeated question of "where did she go?" underscores his confusion and sense of helplessness as he grapples with the reality of his situation.

As the song progresses, the chorus serves as a refrain, repeating the same questions over and over again. The lyrics conjure up images of a man who is haunted by the memory of Lady Luck and the promise of something better. The image of "snake eyes, smile that's devilish" suggests that Lady Luck was not always what she seemed to be, and the singer may have been blinded by his own illusions. The final lines of the song suggest that the singer's world has come crashing down and Lady Luck is truly gone, leaving him without any answers.

Overall, "Lady Luck" is a haunting and introspective song that speaks to the universal human experience of searching for answers and coming up short. The lyrics are poetic and thought-provoking, making it a timeless classic that resonates with listeners to this day.

When I listen to it, it makes me sad in a good way. It makes me think it's being sung to a terminally ill child.
"Why are you worried about the dirt? I don't think that you'll mind. When it's your time." And the "promise I'll wait a while. To make sure that you've moved on." If it's a lullaby, it's scary. Ha. I thought maybe it was her singing to her grandma on her deathbed, too. Makes more sense I guess.
