Monday
Daniel Wesley Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Smoke in the mirror, somebody's jumping the bridge,
And I know it's okay, 'cause it's Monday.
Good morning, it's rush hour, my coffee is already gone.
Smoke in the mirror, somebody's jumping the bridge,
And I know it's okay, 'cause it's Monday,
And I know, I'm late, late again.
The lyrics to Daniel Wesley's song "Monday" describe a typical weekday morning rush hour commute. The opening line, "Good morning, it's rush hour, my coffee is already gone," speaks to the hectic pace of the morning, with the caffeine consumed quickly to keep up with the demands of the day. The following line, "Smoke in the mirror, somebody's jumping the bridge," is a reference to the everyday news of people taking their own lives by jumping from a bridge. However, the singer seems unfazed, almost to the point of acceptance, that this is just another Monday.
The repetition of the phrase "And I know it's okay, 'cause it's Monday," emphasizes the mundaneness and repetition of the workweek routine. Despite the chaos of the traffic and the tragic incident of the suicide, Monday remains the same as any other day - a day to tackle responsibilities and face the challenges that come with them. The final line, "And I know, I'm late, late again," implies that even though the world around us is constantly moving, we often find ourselves falling behind, struggling to keep up with the pace of modern society.
Overall, the lyrics to "Monday" paint a poignant picture of the daily grind many people face in their lives. The song invites us to reflect on our own experiences of struggling to maintain a sense of balance and stability amidst the demands of modern life.
