Roses And Rainbows
Danny Hutton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I were a king
I'd give up everything
Just to have you near me 'cause
Roses and rainbows are you

The sky is always blue
Whenever I'm with you
I think I just love you 'cause
Roses and rainbows are you

(Chorus)
I love the way you hold my hand
The way you understand
The way you make me feel
Like I'm your man

Way up in the sky
I think I see why
The birds do all their singing 'cause
Roses and rainbows are you
Roses and rainbows are you

- Interlude / Chorus -

Way up in the sky
I think I see why
The birds do all their singing 'cause
Roses and rainbows are you

Roses and rainbows are you
Whoo whoo whoo...

Overall Meaning

The song “Roses And Rainbows” is a love letter to a special person in the singer’s life. The opening lyrics, “If I were a king, I’d give up everything just to have you near me,” sets the tone for a passionate declaration of love and devotion. The singer expresses that the person is their everything, represented by the imagery of roses and rainbows. The roses symbolize the beauty and fragrance of the person, while the rainbows represent the way the person brings colors and joy to their life. When the singer is with this person, the sky is always blue, and they feel like they are on cloud nine. The lyrics then go on to express the physical and emotional connection between the two of them, where the singer feels understood and loved as a man. The final lines repeat that this special person is the source of all the joy and beauty in the world, represented by the image of roses and rainbows.

This song was issued under the Hanna-Barbera banner, and was played (briefly) on an episode of "The Flintstones" (Fred hated it!) in '65.

Somehow, I can picture Fred doing the "Frantic" to this tune (make sure to drop bowling ball on Fred's foot first.)

@gladasya 10 The Flintstones was distributed by Screen Gems TV at the time. Speaking of Screen Gems, not long after this release, Danny auditioned for a part in "The Monkees", but was promptly rejected.

Takes me back to being a little girl, living a carefree summer, playing with my best friend and inhaling the scents of gardenias, lemon blossoms and jasmine in the Southern California air. One of my all-time favorite songs.

@Elizabeth Barrow Hi Elizabeth. I was 15 when this song came out. I was in the 9th grade. Radio station KHJ played it first. It was played fairly heavily in their rotation. Every time I heard this song I was in heaven. Still am. And yes, it is the PERFECT pop song. Have a great day.

@Lisbeth Harrell It still sounds good today. I recall reading somewhere that Brian Wilson said it was the perfect pop song.

Yes, I'm from SoCal, and this song was only a hit there. It was a regional hit. I love this song.
