Promised Land
Dave Edmunds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I left my home in Norfolk Virginia,
California on my mind.
We straddled that Greyhound, rode him into Raleigh,
On across Caroline.

We stopped at Charlotte and bypassed Rock Hill,
We never was a minute late.
And we was ninety miles out of Atlanta by sundown,
Rollin' outa Georgia state.

We had motor trouble it turned into a struggle,
Half way 'cross Alabam,
When that 'hound broke down and left us all stranded
In downtown Birmingham.

So right away I bought me a through train ticket,
Right across Mississippi clean
And I was on that midnight flyer outa Birmingham
Smoking into New Orleans.

Somebody help me get out of Louisiana
Just help me get to Houston town.
Well there are people there who care a little 'bout me
And they won't let the poor boy down.

Sure as you're born, they bought me a silk suit,
Put luggage in my hands,
And I woke up high over Albuquerque
On a jet to the promised land.

Workin' on a T-bone steak a la carte
Flying over to the Golden State;
When the pilot told us in thirteen minutes
He would set us at the terminal gate.

Swing low chariot, come down easy
Taxi to the terminal zone;
Cut your engines, an cool your wings,
And let me make it to the telephone.

Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia,
Dial forty four ten O nine
And tell the folks back home this is the promised land

Callin'
And the poor boy's on the line.

Overall Meaning

The Promised Land by Dave Edmunds is a song that deals with the theme of a journey, both geographically and emotionally. It is a classic tale of someone who leaves their home in Norfolk, Virginia, with the goal of finding a better life in California. The song takes us along the journey of the singer as he travels across the country, from Raleigh, North Carolina, to Atlanta, Georgia, through Alabama and Mississippi, and finally to New Orleans, Louisiana. Along the way, he encounters several obstacles, including a breakdown of the Greyhound bus that he's riding, but he persists and eventually reaches his destination.

However, the song's significance goes beyond just the physical journey. It is also a story of self-discovery and the realization that the promised land is not necessarily a tangible place, but rather a state of mind. The singer is searching for something more fulfilling than what he has in Norfolk, and he hopes to find it in California. But in the end, he realizes that what he was looking for was within him all along. The people who care about him and won't let him down are not just in Houston, but also back home in Norfolk.

Overall, The Promised Land is a song that speaks to the universal human experience of seeking a better life and finding one's place in the world. It is a road trip anthem that captures the essence of the American dream and the never-ending quest for happiness and fulfillment.

Dave Edmunds is the class. He
owns Rock and Roll. Anything he touched was gold. Never
made or produced a marginal
record. Could find and make
almost anything his. Explored
different genres as well. Geez,
Get It a perfect album. Everything he chose to do was
so great. So underrated. So
damn good. He deserves more
credit.πŸ‘ŒβœŒοΈ

Dave Edmunds is one of the few later rock & roll artists who really gets the feel of the early rock & roll. This is ageless, timeless and super!
