All along The Watchtower
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There must be some kind of way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief

Business men, they drink my wine
Plough men dig my earth
None of them along the line
Know what any of it is worth

No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke

But you and I we've been through all that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hour is getting late

All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
while all the women came and went
Barefoot servants too

Outside in the cold distance
A wild cat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl

All along the watchtower

Everywhere

Everywhere I went

Overall Meaning

, people were talking about this song, and I couldn't help but listen to it myself. As I listened to the song, it seemed to be a conversation between two people, the Joker and the Thief. The song seems to be driven by the idea that there's more to life than what's right in front of us. The Joker is looking for a way out of the present confusion while the Thief objectively lets him know that a lot of people don’t take life seriously. The last verse feels like a warning that there are forces out there greater than the two of them, and they need to be ready for what’s coming.
