Still Water
Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sad eyes, sad eyes
Where you going with that confidence?

Sad eyes, sad eyes
Where you going with that confidence?

I'm going to where the boats go by
Caledonia river flows so wide
I'm going to where the boats go by
Caledonia river flows so wide

Still water
Laying over
Still water
Laying over
Still water
Laying over

Caledonia river oh so wide

Wild eyes in the wilderness
where you going with the devil in hand?
Wild eyes in the wilderness
where you going with the devil in hand?

I'm going to build the bridges high
For working money, for working money
I'm going to climb the bridges high
Caledonia brother far away

Still water
I'm laying over
Still water
Lay my body down over
Still water
Laying over

Caledonia river so wide

Overall Meaning

The song "Still Water" by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds is a beautiful yet melancholic ballad. In the first verse, Matthews addresses someone with "sad eyes" who seems self-assured and confident, and asks them where they're headed. The answer, revealed in the following lines, takes Matthews and his companion (presumably) to the Caledonia River, which appears to be a place of respite and peace where boats go by and the water is still. The second verse is darker in tone, but still seeks to strike a hopeful note. Matthews refers to someone with "wild eyes" who is carrying "the devil in hand," and wonders where they're headed. The answer is that they're going to build bridges high, presumably a metaphor for achieving something great and working towards stability or prosperity.

The repeated refrain of "still water laying over" seems to reflect a sense of tranquility and calm, but also perhaps a sense of unease. Even in the peaceful, still water, there is a sense of something lingering, something that has yet to be resolved. The final line, "Caledonia river so wide," is repeated several times, almost as if to emphasize the vastness of the river and the journey ahead. Overall, "Still Water" seems to be a song about seeking respite and hope in the face of adversity, and finding comfort in simple pleasures like a peaceful river.
